If you work in Telecom Site Acquisition for decades you learn to deal with rejection. Most people don't want a tower site. Every once in a while though, you get lucky. Yesterday, I drive out to a rural part of FL to look at a Search Ring. I see a lady getting her mail. She and her husband want to lease. I drive down the road and see a couple in their yard. Stop to talk with them. They want to lease. In the span of 1 hour, I had 3 different LLs that wanted to lease. What a refreshing change! Side note: I left Sarasota for Winter Haven to ride out Hurricane Milton (which landed 5-10 miles from my home). When Milton came through WH, the power went out but the cell tower near me worked through the entire storm. Any rational person wants a cell tower near them in a natural disaster. Why? I had no electricity but could still call, email, text, watch weather reports, etc. Cell Towers = Safety in Hurricanes. Your "wi-fi calling" will stop when the power goes out. But with a cell tower near by, you're not totally in the dark and always have a "life-line" to the outside world.

End of Day Report: As of 10:00 am this morning, there were still roughly 873,000 customers without service (1.39 million restored). Projections are still that 500,000 in the Centerpoint coverage area will remain without power going in to next week. 18 staging sites remain open and operating cross the Greater Houston area to address the breadth of the hurricane’s impact and adequately host trucks, equipment and supplies needed across the footprint.?Centerpoint expected to stand up two additional sites starting today. Centerpoint has requested an additional 1,000 mutual assistance personnel to assist with restoration efforts. Crews are starting to arrive and are being onboarded and provided work orders as they become available (Quanta & Oncor). They are also in discussion with Entergy regarding possibility of Entergy crews transitioning to assist with CenterPoint restoration efforts. Centerpoint has deployed 11 mobile generation units and 6 additional units are being deployed. Theu continue assessing further sites for the potential deployment of mobile generation units to provide temporary power restoration to certain critical facilities, such as: cooling centers, healthcare facilities, first responder locations, senior centers, and educational centers. Oncor is sending an additional 4 mobile generation units expected to arrive in Houston today. PLEASE NOTE: There have been multiple instances of linemen attempting to work and restore power having guns pulled on them and being harrased. This impedes their ability to get power restored and puts lives at risk that are working tirelessly for our benefit. Please let them get their job done so that we can tackle to real issues after all the power is restored. Finally, the website continues to be worked on and updated to include estimated restoration times: https://lnkd.in/g6n8xt8M

Cell phone providers Verizon and T-Mobile are gearing up to maintain connectivity for Texans as Tropical System #Beryl approaches the coast. T-Mobile has activated its emergency plan, anticipating hurricane-force winds, heavy rain, and flooding in Southeast and Central Texas. They are collaborating with utility companies to ensure network stability, refueling generators, and charging battery backups to sustain service. T-Mobile is also coordinating with the Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM) to aid first responders and prioritize post-storm recovery efforts. #Verizon is similarly focused on network stability, aiming to minimize signal disruptions for small businesses affected by the storm. They are supporting first responders with #satellite phones, mobile #generators, and over 500 #portablenetwork assets. Beryl is forecasted to make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday, July 7. Follow Amanda Newman to stay up to date with technology. https://lnkd.in/eBMb87x3

Uh oh. You're up against a deadline and need to reach your client? Sorry, the entire US Cellular network is down. Your deal is dead. A tad dramatic, maybe but this week's cell phone outages had me checking in with my emergency preparedness plan and how I can be more prepared. How am I preparing for another potential communications disruption? Ensure you have access to an old-fashioned landline, either at the home or at the office. Make a printed list of all your contacts, including addresses. Purchase a battery operated radio to listen to emergency communications in case you are in the midst of a hurricane, fire, earthquake, tornado, etc. Keep your electronic devices fully charged and/or have a back-up battery on standby if service is there but you lose power. Stash some cash. Credit cards cannot be processed when communications lines fail or electric supply ceases without back up generators. Keep a printed list/copies of your bank account information and other important documents that you may not be able to access and keep this in a safe place. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a TON of people to callback.

When you’re MAGA and you’ve lost the New York Post - that’s some serious BS. Starlink made headlines with a seemingly generous offer: "Starlink is now free for 30 days" for those affected by Hurricane Helene. However, when you look at the fine print, it looks more like an advertisement than the humanitarian aid it was initially portrayed to be. Users are still required to purchase the hardware. The Starlink terminal, generally priced at $350, is reportedly discounted to $299 for disaster relief. However, the total cost comes to nearly $400 when factoring in shipping and tax. The automatic subscription model is another aspect of the offer that has raised eyebrows. After the 30-day free period, new customers who qualify for free access will be automatically moved to a paid $120-a-month residential subscription tied to the location where the terminal was set up.

The NYT Wordle puzzle got it right a few days ago. Fiber! Once again, here in Venice, FL, Hurricane Milton demonstrated the resiliency of Fiber-to-the-Home networks. On Wednesday morning, October 9th we "evacuated" 10 miles north to Osprey, FL. Landfall was ~ 8:30pm EDT. We returned home Thursday afternoon ~ 1:00pm. Our home was undamaged, but we had no electric service. As soon as I turned on my back-up generator and switched on the circuit breakers containing my ONU and router I had internet service via my FTTH provider. That service has continued uninterrupted. Fixed Wireless Broadband providers did not have service for the better part of a week (in fact, cell phone service, including texting, was at best intermittent through the following weekend). A week later the Cable-TV provider still did not have service restored. Basically the same story as Hurricane Ian in 2022. After 40 years I guess I sound like a broken record, but if reliability matters, choose Fiber. If not, pick another solution.
