Did you watch the Grammys last night? The incomparable Jay-Z accepted the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award with his 12-year-old daughter Blue Ivy at his side, noting all the progress the music industry has made around inclusion - - but reminding the Recording Academy that there is still work to be done. A timely message given it's February - the designated month for celebrating the contributions and achievements Black people have made throughout the history of the United States (and we get 29 days this #LeapYear!). Yet with all of our contributions in the ~160 years since the Emancipation of 1865, the racial wealth gap continues to grow - the typical black family has just?1/10th the wealth?of the typical white one. Relax folks...I can see some of you rolling your eyes. This post is not about the structural barriers to black economic equality - - access to education, disparities in the criminal justice system, opportunity and wage gaps in corporate America, to name a few. THIS POST IS A CELEBRATION of the resilience of black people and our ability to maintain our health, cultivate positive attitudes and overcome challenges while facing systemic racism and other forms of discrimination daily. THIS POST IS A CALL TO ACTION to, as Jay-Z said last night - "KEEP SHOWING UP!!! Some of us may have been (and may continue to be) robbed of opportunity...but outside of that, we got to keep showing up," Jay said. "In life, just keep showing up...keep showing up until they give you all those accolades you feel (know) you deserve. Until they call you Chairman, until they call you a genius, until they call you the greatest of all time. You feel me?" **Queues Blueprint 3 - So Ambitious** #IYKYK #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackExcellence #BlackGirlMagic

Today’s Black History Reflection is on my other love: music. Growing up, I was influenced by both US and British artists, and it’s amazing how, on reflection, I see the connection between the music I loved and the work I do today. I grew up listening to Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Tupac, and Nas—artists whose music spoke to resilience, identity, and social justice. In many ways, their lyrics shaped my understanding of the world and, unknowingly, set me on the path of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion work. One of my first cassette tapes was Snap’s "Rhythm is a Dancer" (I will come back to some of the others at another time) As a Black British Caribbean teenager in the 90s, I was also influenced by the UK music scene—Soul II Soul, Damage, M People (who have to get a special mention) and artists like Ms. Dynamite and the rise of garage music. Being from Manchester, the house and dance scene had a massive impact on me as well. Even now, I still listen to soulful house to calm my mood or garage music to get into a happy place. Just like clothes, music has always been a form of expression for me. Both allow us to present our identity to the world in creative and meaningful ways. Whether through the songs we listen to or the outfits we wear, we are constantly telling a story about who we are and what we value. For me, Black music was never just about entertainment—it was about expression and identity. It’s a reminder that British history is Black history, and the contributions of Black culture through music, art, and beyond, have been pivotal in shaping the UK as we know it today. This Black History Month, let’s celebrate the influence of Black culture and reflect on how it has shaped not just our history, but the world we live in today. #BlackHistoryMonth #BritishHistoryIsBlackHistory #ReclaimingNarratives #Leadership #BlackCulture #ImpactAndIntergrity

Why aren’t more Black people in senior-level roles in this industry? Why aren’t people of color the gatekeepers of Black culture, especially when so much of the music that drives this industry comes from our communities? It never made sense to me that individuals outside of our race often dictate our sound, determine how our artists make music, and control decisions about our culture. How can we ensure our voices and contributions are represented authentically if we aren’t in the rooms where these decisions are made? The music industry thrives on Black culture, yet the leadership doesn’t reflect the people who create the heartbeat of this industry. It’s time for that to change.
