Lovely to present the work that I and many others (namely Justine Bell-James, Rose Foster, Pedro Fidelman and so many others) have done, today at the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science weekly seminar. Key takeaways ?? Restoration is not well supported under current conservation policies- the focus is more on preservation of the status quo, not on allowing activities (even if they’re for net benefit purposes). Permitting is complex and often difficult to navigate for restoration practitioners, and has led to the perverse outcome of limiting restoration uptake, at a time when we REALLY need to be expanding (e.g. GBF Target 2 - restore 30% of degraded …coastal and marine ecosystems by 2030. see https://lnkd.in/dviVNCGF ?? This lack of fit for purpose policy is driving restoration projects to sub-optimal locations and requiring practioners to take on legal liability **in perpetuity**, further disincentivising restoration. Making this even more challenging, there are also novel interventions being proposed in response to climate change impacts which challenge the current legal frameworks even further. I’m so incredibly proud of the work we’ve done over the last 5 years with restoration practitioners like The Nature Conservancy and OzFish Unlimited and with government agencies to help break through these challenges. Keep an eye out in the coming months for: ?? Permitting guidelines for oysters reef restoration and restoration of tidal flow (ie the blue carbon method) for QLD, NSW, SA and TAS). ?? Governance guideline for reef interventions which will be available and presented at Australian Marine Sciences Association conference in Hobart next week! ?? And lots of new work with UQ Law School and Centre for Policy Futures, UQ identifying solutions from other areas and other countries and many policy changes on the horizon to support marine and coastal restoration, and help achieve Australia’s restoration goals.

$58,000 grant will support research, documentation of African American historic resources - via The Enquirer Gazette - The Southern Maryland National Heritage Area recently announced a $58,000 grant from the Maryland Historical Trust’s fiscal 2025 Historic Preservation Non-Capital Grant Program. How does the ocean shape your identity? The UN Ocean Decade recently shared a study on "marine identity," led by Dr. Pamela Buchan, exploring the connection between people and the ocean and how it shapes our sense of self. Here’s an excerpt from the abstract: “Research suggests that the relationship people have with marine environments can influence their depth of engagement in marine citizenship action, and the important role for ‘marine identity’ in driving that action. Although identity is well-researched, marine identity is a concept novel to academia and a baseline understanding is required, both to grasp the scope of the concept, and to support research into its role in transforming the human-ocean relationship.” Here’s the link to the entire article: https://lnkd.in/eKbxPq_a

It’s Earth Day, and every state has some earth set aside as public lands. Thirty states have at least one national park, as do American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The federal government owns the lion’s share of public lands, most of which are in the West. Alaska has the most: just over 89% of the state is federal or state public lands. The BBNJ (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) agreement is a landmark international effort to conserve and sustainably use marine biodiversity in areas beyond national borders. This initiative is vital for protecting the high seas' ecosystems, which are crucial for global biodiversity, climate regulation, and the well-being of coastal communities. By establishing guidelines for marine protected areas, sustainable use of marine genetic resources, and capacity building, the BBNJ agreement aims to ensure that the oceans remain healthy and productive for future generations. #BBNJ #Oceans #Sustainability #GlobalCooperation

This Treaties Recognition Week, we reflect on the history and ongoing significance of the agreements made between Indigenous nations and the Crown that continue to shape the land we live and work on. ? ?? Between the Lakes Treaty (1792)? In this treaty, the Mississauga's of the Credit ceded approximately 3 million acres of land between Lake Huron, Ontario, and Erie to make space for British settlers. While land was promised to the Six Nations along the Grand River, they were granted less than 20% of what was agreed upon. The areas we now recognize as urban centers like Hamilton, Waterloo, and Guelph, as well as the communities of Woolwich, Wellesley, and Wilmot, were once part of this vast land. ? ?? Haldimand Treaty (1784)? Signed as a token of gratitude for the Six Nations' alliance during the American Revolution, the Haldimand Treaty promised land along the Grand River. Despite this, today, Six Nations only occupies 5% of the land promised. WCHC’s St. Jacobs location falls within the Haldimand Tract, highlighting the enduring importance of these agreements. ? ?? Two Row Wampum? The Two Row Wampum, an early agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Dutch settlers, represents a vision of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and collaboration, with each group walking their own path side by side. ? As we reflect on these historical agreements, it’s important to continue learning about the land we live on, and the relationships we must nurture moving forward. ? ??
