Jason Watt (he/him) CD's words hit the mark. Advocis, stop complaining about your critics, who, BTW, are entirely valid in their criticism, and get you to act together or, better yet do us all a favour and fold. One more thing: Treat your members with the simple respect of being transparent. Case in point: Instead of hand waving away the questions about these cash-value life insurance policies that you for some reason own, by simply saying, "they are old and have performed well," maybe use it as an opportunity to be transparent and answer the obvious questions: - Whose lives are they on? - Why were they sold in the first place? - Who got paid the commissions for these? If this is innocent, you should have no issue disclosing this information. If something not above board happened here, come clean. Either way, cursory dismissals are not the way to treat your members.

STEM should serve as the cornerstone of education everywhere. It encompasses much more than just science, technology, engineering, and math. STEM education fosters collaboration, builds confidence, enhances language skills, promotes communication, improves reading comprehension, connects to history, and encourages fluency. In essence, STEM education offers a well-rounded, holistic approach to learning.
Thank you, Jacksonville Elementary School Team, for allowing us to share STEM-based learning with your students and families last night! It was a joy to see familiar faces and parents inquiring about summer STEM camps for their children. Building future leaders is truly fantastic! https://lnkd.in/g3HgVKB2

For 30 years, Children's Defense Fund has held the Ella Baker Child Policy Training Institute to prepare hundreds of college-aged young people to teach CDF Freedom Schools? curriculum at our program sites across America. This year's national training welcomes more than 1,500 youth advocates. On Thursday, CDF Vice President and Chief Program Officer Sheri Brady joined with Denise Dean, executive vice president of East Tennessee Freedom Schools, to appear on WATE-TV's Living East Tennessee with Veronica Ogbe and Amber Lynn Carroll. Brady and Dean discussed a public demonstration Children’s Defense Fund has planned to protect the freedom to read in Tennessee and across the country. "Reading is fundamental and it's really important to actually engage students and a lot of time if students don't see themselves in the stories they read, they won't read,” Brady said. “So, it's really important they have books they can relate to and understand." The event, which will also feature a march through downtown Knoxville, is also meant to bring attention to the proliferation of book bans across the country. Such methods of censorship have proven harmful to young people. "I talk to families in two ways about books,” Dean said. “So, our books are mirrors that reflect us, our cultures, the stories that are familiar to us, but they're also windows; windows into other cultures, other lifestyles and other people. So, whereas the mirrors are affirming for the children, the windows allow them to have greater understanding and empathy that allow them to deal with people who are different than them in a healthy way." https://lnkd.in/ePDt-N9q

Proud to be a University of South Carolina Gamecock! There are lots of reasons to have Gamecock pride, but today my pride focuses of access and affordability of higher education for South Carolina high school graduates. Starting with admissions for the fall 2024 semester, USC will admit all students in the top 10 percent of their class at South Carolina high schools. Admissions = access. But as President Amiridis wrote, “…access without affordability is sometimes meaningless.” So in addition to access/admission, the USC Commitment will cover costs of tuition and academic fees for South Carolina students who are in the top 10% of their graduating class and whose family income is less than $80,000. Accesss and affordability… that’s how change, how difference is made. Go Gamecocks!

Attention California parents! Did you know that up to $1,500 is available to low income, foster, and/or homeless kids in grades K-12 attending public schools in the state? That's right! This money can be used towards college savings and is waiting for up to 3.6 million eligible kids. However, only 350,000 parents have claimed their kids' accounts so far. Don't let this opportunity slip away! For many families in marginalized communities, this sum of money is a fortune, and it could be the jump start that kids need to become happier and wealthier adults. Studies show that college graduates make an average of $1,000,000 more over their lifetime than those with only a high school diploma. Moreover, owning a college fund with at least $500 makes a child 3x more likely to attend college and 4x less likely to drop out. So, if you know anyone who is from a low-income household with grade school kids, please encourage them to sign up at www.calkids.org. Remember, sometimes all a kid needs is a little lift.
Join us in celebrating this amazing CalKIDS milestone—350K accounts claimed and counting! ?? Now it’s your turn. Keep the momentum going by claiming your eligible child's free funded CalKIDS college savings account. They could receive up to $1,500 for college or career training. The time is now. Visit CalKIDS.org to learn more! Financial Literacy has never been more important than before, and the unfortunate reality is that many public school curriculums do not currently provide the roadmap for students to be financially responsible by the time they turn 18. I’m looking forward to partnering with Motivate Our Minds beginning later this month by offering weekly financial literacy to students ranging K-5. Planting the seeds of financial success early in development will set these kids up for success! https://lnkd.in/eZCTW-nf

4 out of 10 Southern states rank in the bottom 10 states for per-student expenditures. 4 out of 10 Southern states rank in the bottom 10 states for average teacher salaries. 6 out of 10 Southern states have the highest child poverty rates in the country. While the South grows and transforms, our systems of education remain locked in historic patterns of disinvestment and inequality. In some of these states, like Tennessee, the money is already there. It's a matter of deciding to invest in all the children of the South.
We were very excited to announce the launch of Southerners for Fair School funding today. An initiative of Ed Trust - Tennessee, our central goal is to work with advocates across the South to achieve better funding for public schools. Southern progress is national progress. Check it out and let me know what you think! https://lnkd.in/gMyBqssj

"State and local funding for afterschool and summer programs will be increasingly important as challenges related to grants and funding are likely to emerge at the federal level." As federal funding faces uncertainty, our own Erik Peterson underscores the importance of partnering with statewide afterschool networks, local intermediaries, and city leaders to continue building support for the afterschool programs that serve our young people.
