Celebrating 45 Years of Impact! ?? Legislative Training - April 7-9, 1999 ?? In 1999, FL Impact held a transformative two-day training in Tallahassee with members of the Florida Coalition for the Homeless and Impact board organizations. Fifty-three participants delved into the budget process, discussed bills impacting low-income individuals, and monitored legislative sessions. Highlights included a news conference with Florida’s bishops and religious leaders on title loan reform and a private meeting with Governor Jeb Bush, where a farm worker leader appealed for assistance for displaced farm workers around Lake Apopka. Another farm worker group advocated for legislation on the harvesting of the saw palmetto berry, crucial to their livelihoods. We appreciate where we've come from and where we're going. Working with one of our favorite clients in Noblesville, Indiana today. The Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP) asked us to produce two new training videos for private well testing. Approximately 23 million households across the US rely on private well water for their main drinking water source. Most private wells are unregulated, and the owners themselves are responsible for their water quality, quantity, and necessary maintenance.

All colleges receiving federal funding should be required to provide adequate basic needs services and those services should receive government funding. Period. Please join me in the fight to make it happen. Why? It’s Thursday. Here’s what my students experienced just THIS WEEK: (1) A mom with a 10 year old found herself homeless after the sudden death of her fiancé. (2) A mom with a toddler who is also caring for her grandparent witnessed the murder of her brother. (3) A dad with a 15 year old experienced the stillborn birth of his second child. All 3 students are in programs focused on high-demand, high-wage credentials. I’ve got 5 other students who are struggling with rent, 4 who can’t find jobs, and 3 others dealing with significant illnesses. Teaching in today’s world requires empathy and compassion- and also *services.* I’m grateful that in every case I’ve been able to make a substantive referral for support at Community College of Philadelphia. At the same time, I know those services are understaffed and underfunded. And that’s by design. We are doing far more with far less, with students who will experience the greatest ROI if only they reach the finish line. Invest in #communitycolleges. Invest in #basicneeds supports. Take #RealCollege students and their lives seriously. Our futures depend on theirs- and their futures depend on our decisions. Start by having your organization sign on to this coalition letter calling on the Biden-Harris Administration to take a series of actions to improve SNAP access and enrollment, and take steps to address campus hunger.?? https://lnkd.in/efnN9Bfd

Over 60 years ago, civil rights leader Cesar Chavez established the National Farm Workers Service Center with the vision of transforming communities beyond the workplace. ?? In the 1960s, Cesar Chavez and his colleagues established the Huelga School in Delano to teach the children of grape strikers and union staff. Lack of educational opportunities for their children was one of the crippling challenges farm workers faced. ?? Today, the Chavez Foundation carries on Cesar's vision. Our Education Fund is committed to building a just society by educating the hearts and minds of children through diverse and culturally responsive products and services. ?? This year, the Education Fund served over 60,000 students in under-resourced communities. They aim to build an educational enterprise that will impact one million learners by 2028. Amongst all the quite frankly entitled posts I’ve seen (and blocked) in the last few weeks relating to school fees and those lucky people (and here I’m categorically not referring to all families who send their kids to private schools) who have the luxury of choosing to allocate an income to school fees thus rendering them unable to afford Heinz instead of own-brand, this post from The Sutton Trust jumped out as something that actually matters in the real world. Social mobility isn’t just a catchphrase. There are complexities, which I understand and I’m sympathetic to, especially relating to placement for children and young people with SEND who can’t be allocated a maintained placement, or who are missing an education because their parents can’t afford to self-fund, but my goodness, how has it become such an echo chamber for people with such a narrow world-view and no idea how many families are sliding into poverty. Let’s have debate not a linked-in version of a Facebook community group.
?? "We know that there are lots of children at the moment that are going into school hungry...making sure that all of those children have the opportunity for some good food at the start of the day can really help." Our Head of Research and Policy, Rebecca Montacute, on the positive measures in the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill, including the rollout of free breakfast clubs in primary schools ??
