Interesting take on the consolidation of dental practice ownership in USA. While transitions have accelerated I was surprised to hear that 'full' consolidation is projected to occur within next 5 years and cap out at 60-70%. Definitely a good time to get a baseline from your financial professional. #practicevaluation #practicemangement

Thanks for sharing Morgan Pace. The trend is similar up here in Canada but the percentages are much lower. The DSO phenomenon is not new to Canada but my informal research indicates that the profession is resisting the lure of the DSO. ~75% of our dentists remain in solo ownership practice. ~10% of Canadian dental offices are DSO owned and operated. ~15% are group/partner owned. Canadians are more traditional in dental care delivery systems.
In Nevada, over 50% of early career dentists practice in DSOs. It’s over 40% in New Mexico, Georgia, Texas, Florida, and Nevada. This has a trickledown effect for private practices recruiting associates in secondary markets. It’s harder than ever to get noticed without help. Why Are We Selling Out Our Profession? A Call to Reflect for 2025 Colleagues, I feel compelled to share something I encounter almost daily in my practice. New patients walk in, sharing stories of leaving their former dental offices because “things aren’t the same anymore.” They tell me how, ever since their dentist sold to a DSO (Dental Service Organization) backed by private equity, the care has changed. It’s become impersonal, rushed, and focused on profit over patient well-being. This shift is heartbreaking—not just for our patients, but for our profession. Why are we doing this to ourselves? The quality of work has decreased significantly. The profitability for dentists hasn’t improved over the years despite the promises. The only real winners in this equation are the investors—not the patients who trust us, nor the doctors who pour their lives into this profession. I urge you to think long and hard about the decisions we’re making and the legacy we’re leaving behind. Money is a factor, yes, but it shouldn’t be the only guiding principle. We have the power to protect the integrity of our profession, to prioritize patient care, and to uphold the standards that brought us into dentistry in the first place. For 2025, my hope is that we allow other factors—integrity, compassion, and quality care—to guide our decisions. Let’s honor the trust our patients place in us and the values that define what it truly means to be a dentist. Let’s not sell out our profession. Let’s save it.
