And, in that Forbes article is about the best concise description I have heard or read of the problems in our healthcare system: “5. Our Healthcare Reality Is By Design. “When the government plays a bigger role in healthcare, policymakers and businesses get more intimate. Influencing policy is more effective than competition for large businesses to make money, and controlling healthcare dollars is more effective than empowering patients for policymakers to reap political gains. This business-policymaker marriage perpetuates a system that enriches both while compromising patients, workers, and taxpayers. The key to breaking this vicious cycle is, in Mr. Allen’s words, to ‘stand up to bullies’ and ‘fight back.’” He told us how to do that in his book, “Never Pay the First Bill”. Busy day today! In the complex landscape of healthcare billing, transparency should lead the way. Yet, a recent CBS Mornings story, shared by Cynthia Fisher, shows the reality is often a misstep. Despite federal rules for price transparency, patients like Pat Simmons face unexpected and exorbitant costs. It's time for healthcare to change its tune. Here are some key takeaways: Compliance with Transparency: Despite federal rules requiring hospitals to post their prices online, many do not fully comply. This noncompliance could be costing Americans over a trillion dollars a year in healthcare spending. Real-World Impact: The story of Pat Simmons illustrates the confusion and financial distress caused by opaque pricing. After receiving a CAT scan that was billed at an exorbitant price, she was left with a significant bill that threatened her savings, despite the hospital's website showing a much lower cash price for the same service. Sound familiar? Enforcement and Fines: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have begun enforcing these transparency rules and issued fines, but so far, only a small fraction of hospitals have been penalized. The Role of Advocacy: Organizations like Patient Rights Advocate are actively analyzing hospital compliance and advocating for greater transparency to protect patients from unexpected costs. After Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s nomination for head of HHS was announced, I saw many attacks on him, mainly from establishment doctors and scientists. But these attacks miss what's truly important. This is the problem – The American medical system delivers substandard care at twice the cost relative to the rest of the Western nations, iatrogenic deaths are startling high and far exceed the number of firearms deaths by multiples, and chronic disease is rampant and increasing due to a system that treats symptoms instead of looking for root causes. It is a travesty that scores of prominent medical doctors and scientists failed to raise and address these fundamental issues. Groupthink, trade defense, and greed have prevented these men and women from truly serving the public good. For this reason, trust in the medical system and public health is at all-time lows. RFK Jr. has brought attention to these fundamental issues, and he will tackle what scores of previous medical doctors and scientists failed to do in the past. We all need RFK Jr. to do what needs to be done. Let's support him in this endeavor and make genuine, lasting reforms.
