Following the biggest turnout for a parliamentary vote in over 40 years (67%), a new era has has begun in #France with Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National (Off) opening up a big lead in first-round voting for the Assemblée nationale, putting it within touching distance of national government for the first time in its history. According to Ipsos, early results indicate #RN has secured 34% of the vote, putting it on course to win 230-280 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly (up from 88). If confirmed in the second round of voting, this would make it the biggest group in Parliament. A result at the upper end of that range would increase the likelihood of achieving an overall majority (289). The run off with the Left-wing #FrontPopulaire and #Ensemble will take place a week from now on 7 July with a number of contests potentially splitting three ways ( “triangulaires”). Much still depends on the stances, alliances & tactical voting that occur then.

The UK's General Election has seen the most unrepresentative result in British history, as Keir Starmer won 34% of total votes but snapped up 64% of seats. This imbalance has greatly intensified calls for Proportional Representation (PR). However, Joshua Edwicker is sceptical of PR, despite the unfairness of the current First Past the Post (FPTP) system. He argues that FPTP prevents the rise of extremist parties and maintains strong, stable governments. Edwicker also emphasises that FPTP retains the vital constituency link between elected representatives and their communities, which he says is crucial for local representation. Edwicker contends that PR undermines these aspects of the UK's political system. #fptp #pr #electoralreform #unitedkingdom #reform https://lnkd.in/e6Y3saeu

Today is the deadline to register to vote in the UK. I cannot express enough how important this is. We’re all pissed off at politics and politicians for one reason or another, and voting is one of the best ways to make that heard. Don’t get me wrong, the FPTP voting system in the UK is heavily weighted in favour of Labour & Tories, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get important representation in the House of Commons. I can’t tell you who to vote for but I would really recommend voting by your principles, and not because of some idea of party loyalty or what the media tells you each party is about. There are some amazing sites that allow you to check the voting record of politicians and also allows you to see the stance that each political party takes on various topics. TheyWorkForYou (theyworkforyou dot com) is my go to recommendation for see what my MP has voted for in the past. The Tories are set for a massive loss, which means we can use this opportunity to vote in some brilliant independent and green MPs to bring truly progressive and moral politics to the room. So, don’t forget to register!! Today is the deadline ? #GeneralElection #UKPolitics #RegisterToVote #Politics #ClimateChange
