"I’ll never work for a Big Four." ? That’s what a younger me once thought. Yet here I am, with LinkedIn reminding me to celebrate my 8-year journey at KPMG Belgium ?? —and, even more exciting, my promotion to Director! ?? Looking back, I vividly remember those early days. Coming from academia, I was thrown into a new world of policies, procedures, compliance, risk management, timesheets, tight deadlines, and last-minute changes. It was overwhelming at first, and I struggled quite a lot, but I’m so grateful I took that leap . Over those years, KPMG has been much more than just a workplace. It’s a company that upholds quality and integrity above all else, fosters a culture of collaboration, works intensively on diversity and inclusion and encourages every individual to seize opportunities and grow both professionally and personally. KPMG has been the place that made a difference to me . Celebrating this promotion, a special thanks to Bart Meyer – my coach and mentor over the past year, for showing me new dimensions of leadership and guiding me towards this new role. How do Big Four graduate programs compare to those offered by mid-tier firms? ?? Interesting report by FT on delayed promotions for graduates of PwC, which appears to follow the drop in demand for consultancy services which peaked post-Covid. It would appear that many clients (and candidates) are opting to leave the Big Four in favour of mid-tier firms which, if anything like UHY Manchester, are experiencing tremendous growth. Graduate programs offered by the Big Four are full of promise and are fiercely competitive, but are they really the most attractive option? In my experience, mid-tier firms offer; - Better work-life balance - A healthier culture - More opportunities to work on jobs end-to-end - Significantly more personable progression plans I have friends that enrolled at Big Four firms out of college and university who are now in completely different careers. When they talk about their experiences, they couldn't be further apart from my own at a mid-tier firm, and I can't help but wonder whether it was the environment rather than the role that pushed them away from the industry. To quote the article; “None of us can understand the logic they’ve used to choose September grads over us. They [PwC] might as well have picked our names out of a hat". Don't know about you, but that doesn't sound like the sort of environment I'm used to.

This article is somewhat misleading. 90 delay in promotions out of 3500. That is not a problem. The article does not address if the 90 hires are meeting their productivity goals, which is crucial in any consulting firm. Are they doing what’s necessary for their career growth? Is their market as profitable as other big 4 business lines? Theses are questions to be asked. Also no matter how well you support employees growth you have to ask yourself what makes a business sense for your company. I believe in good business people partners at big 4s are taking everything into consideration.

Do you know what we learned from reading 4000 Glassdoor.com reviews about the Big Four? That Ernst & Young (EY - shown in blue) is the only one that is clearly separable for some reason.. The rest (KPGM, PwC, Deloitte) are so similar that our GroupFinder cannot tell them apart. But why? It's hard to tell at first glance.. But they (especially group 4 & 5) complain the most about work-life balance (or the lack of) both in scores and written text. They also think the worst about senior management compared to other firms and refrain to say anything about the CEO the most. Finally, the share of reviews coming from early (1-3) and mid tenure (3-5) people is also a lot higher. ?? A Big4 Story: The Power of Supportive Teams ?? People sometimes have mixed opinions about the culture at Big4 firms. Today, I want to share an experience that shows just how supportive and collaborative the work environment here can truly be. During my last project, a simple lapse led me to make a critical error: I mistakenly ran a script in the Production environment instead of a non-Production one, unintentionally deleting assets used by hundreds of users for mission-critical processes at a prominent client. My heart sank as I realized the potential impact – the damage to our team’s image, and the possibility of serious backlash from the client. Instead of blame or criticism, however, what I encountered was a team willing to rally together in the face of adversity. In an emergency meeting, Vikash Kumar (Senior Consultant), Puratan Pani (Team Lead), and Yulan Zhang (Onshore Consultant) immediately analyzed the situation calmly, guiding me through the Root Cause Analysis. We worked late into the night (on a Saturday, no less!), determined to resolve the issue together. Their calm, positive outlook kept me focused, even during high-pressure moments. Even the client was understanding and constructive in their approach, asking only for updates and steps to prevent this in the future. And a special thanks to Akshay Sapre (my mentor and Manager), who not only offered us a solution ex post facto but taught me invaluable lessons in leadership, humility, and resilience. In the end, we successfully restored the files. This experience highlighted what sets our culture apart: a commitment to growth and teamwork. Mistakes happen, but a team that empowers you to learn from them and move forward is something special. This is why I’m proud to work at Deloitte. Training at the Big Four - is it all it's cracked up to be? ?? The Financial Times today are reporting on the continuing struggle of the Big Four in 2024, focusing on the delayed promotions of PwC graduate consultants. It's a result of the lower demand for professional services from clients, which will have a knock-on affect into the demand for audit services - especially if cheaper, but high-quality, options exist. With the massive rise of acquisitions and mergers of smaller accountancy firms by private-equity backed mid-tiers, the cost/benefit analysis of the Top 30 has never been more in their favour. With more clients choosing to leave the Big Four in the search for cheaper fees, and the delayed progression opportunities for their graduates - is it now better to train at a mid tier firm? ??? Reflecting on my career journey, making the decision to leave KPMG Global was one of the hardest choices I had to make few years back. I was doing well, I had a fantastic team, my work was being recognized, and I was growing professionally. Prior to KPMG,I was with EY so the idea of stepping away from the Big 4 world was daunting. Naturally, many questioned my choice: "Why not join Deloitte or PwC and continue the Big 4 path?" Do the PARIKRAMA is what they say! After all, the Big 4 is where many believe you should stay if you want to climb the corporate ladder. But my gut feeling said something else-told me to take the less travelled path (credit to Robert Frost). And that’s when Acuity Knowledge Partners came into the picture. I’ll admit, the decision wasn’t easy. Acuity was a different environment from the world I was accustomed to, and I wasn’t sure if I was making the right move. But a very dear friend told me ‘Keep swimming Nemo” and i took that leap of faith. I am going to complete 2 years with this firm and I couldn’t be prouder of my decision to join Acuity. I’m incredibly grateful to work at a company that’s not just recognized as a great place to work but is genuinely a fantastic place to grow and thrive. I’ve had the privilege of learning from some of the best minds in the industry, while also bringing forward some of the best practices I gained during my time with the Big 4’s. The past two years have reaffirmed that sometimes, stepping off the beaten path leads to unexpected and fulfilling opportunities.
