Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) is an independent social change organisation working to support and speed up the transition to a more equitable and just future. Since 2015, 5% of JRF’s endowment has been allocated to social investment in order to fund and support organisations that further the foundation’s overarching vision and mission. Alongside meaningful social impact, these investments are also expected to deliver financial returns so that funds can be recycled and invested again. To date, JRF has made social investments in 21 social enterprises and 14 impact funds. It works with investees and other funders to develop suitable funding structures, utilising a range of financial instruments including loans, bonds, shares, community shares, and limited partnerships. Illumen Capital, a Black-owned and operated impact fund addressing systemic inequity, has raised a $32.75 million Catalyst Fund. The Catalyst Fund included capital from the Health Forward Foundation, the California Wellness Foundation, and the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, among others. The fund will support first-time fund managers and entrepreneurs, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. Illumen Capital, founded in 2016 by Daryn Dodson, is an impact fund of funds that addresses systemic inequity by reducing racial and gender bias in investing. As part of the 2025 project year,?Regional Economic Innovation (REI)?has awarded the National Coalition for Community Capital (NC3) with support to host the upcoming event,?"Changing the Paradigm: Mobilizing Community Investment Funds."?This event is an example of the fluidity within the REI model to support innovation in economically distressed regions. The model allows for technical assistance via the Student Led Faculty Guided projects, Co-Learning Plans for research and Innovation Fellows' that continue innovative work within their communities and regions. This in-person convening will take place on?March 7, 2025, in?East Lansing, Michigan.
