I used Chinese New Year for a quick hide-out at one of the closest ski resorts to Beijing. As a wintersport aficionado I (of course) watched the winter games in Beijing 2022. Some of the competitions took place in #Thaiwoo/Chongli District. My summary after two days of intense skiing: these are not the Alps (of course). But the fast train connection from Beijing straight to the resort - 60 minutes - is fantastic, the snow quality is really great (and it is by far not all ‘artificial’, as one sees below), and the sport experience was far beyond my expectations. For me the most fascinating take-away: wintersport is really ?talk of town‘ in China. It is affordable, low-threshold (for Beijingers), and connects the largely urbanized population with their breathtaking landscape - with the Chinese Great Wall literally a stone’s throw away. Why aren’t we able to start a new Olympic chapter in Germany?
