“We will treat you with firmness, fairness, dignity, and compassion” I’m often asked, how in the heck did YOU wind up in HR? It’s a fair question of someone that was active military for 20+ years. Those careers intersecting may not seem logical without context. So, this is how a #Marine knew he’d be in Human Resources when he grew up… I’ve dedicated myself to helping #Veterans land on their feet after serving our great Nation, mostly as a repayment to those that helped me in my career and later my transition from boots to sneakers. I balance this personal endevour while assuring my TPM, ColorLab, and TrebleHook Teams also receive the very best “human”experience possible. I’m privledged because TPM encourages me to be engaged with the local community and join organizations such as Veteran Treatment Court, Greenville County Workforce Development Board, and Greenville SHRM. When I was active duty, in the United States Marine Corps, I was focused on the mission, but mission accomplishment requires highly trained and properly equipped people. Take care of the Marines, and they will take care of the mission. It was usually that simple. In 2002, I thought I knew a thing or two about the art and science of leading people, but in reality I was a novice at best. I joined a force recon unit in Alabama that year and met THE authority on personnel management and servent leadership. His name was John Halpin SHRM-CP, but they called him BIG JOHN for good reason. He was the epitome of what HR could be if given the chance to do it right as a Marine first sergeant and later sergeant major. I followed his career post-Marine Corps and because of him, I realized the occupation I wanted to be in was actually called “Human Resources”. I did my best to emulate him, falling short often. Taking on jobs, assignments, and duties that aligned with the “civilian” HR profession, and continuing to gather as much information about the equivalent civilian role. Marine Online? Yeah, that’s an HRIS, got it! JPES/PES? Sure, that’s performance evaluations! Easy day! Awards programs, FMLA, employee lifecycle, investigations, escalations, OSHA, recruitment and onboarding? Yeah, we do all of that! Later, I decided a proper step would be to train basic recruits and learn a deeper understanding of the art and science of leading people. Unlike the movies, it’s not just about screaming at people for three months straight… As a Senior Drill Instructor on Parris Island, I had to memorize a speech that we gave to new recruits on the morning they meet the DI’s, the folks with the shiny belts and big funny hats. Sitting there, scared as can be, as the unknown finally comes to life. ???Our mission is to train YOU to become a UNITED STATES MARINE! ???? And there it was. What became my HR mantra: “We will treat you as we do our fellow Marines, with firmness, fairness, dignity, and compassion”. Get this part right, and they will take care of the mission.
