Plastic is the #1 contaminate that compost manufacturers have to deal with. It's a global problem that needs to be addressed, and #plasticrecycling is likely not the solution. Only 8% of plastic in the US gets recycled. https://lnkd.in/ef9MneXQ

A recent investigation by Everyday Plastic? and the Environmental Investigation Agency tracking the outcomes of soft plastics collected for recycling ?by UK supermarkets, reinforces the need for a reduction in plastic production and a shift toward truly sustainable alternatives ?? This investigation reinforces the need to replace and reduce plastic use. Consumers want to do the right thing and recycle their waste, but without adequate infrastructure in place unfortunately it’s often not possible. Solinatra provides fully biodegradable, plastic-free material that doesn’t require complex recycling systems ??. Their compostable properties ensure Solinatra naturally breaks down in municipal composting facilities or home compost bins ?? without leaving microplastics or any harmful pollutants. Even if Solinatra ends up in incineration, it will not release harmful contaminants. Instead of only relying on recycling or takeback schemes that might not be very effective, Solinatra is part of a circular economy solution that significantly reduces packaging waste ???? Next month at the final round of negotiations of the UN Global Plastic Treaty, we must all call on all countries to support an ambitious treaty to lead us to a zero waste economy. #Solinatra #MakesItAlright #Sustainability #SustainablePackaging

"Each year the world?produces?more than 450 million metric tons of plastic, mostly from fossil fuels, and generates 350 million metric tons of plastic waste. Around half of that waste is dumped into landfills, according to?figures?compiled by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Another 19 percent is incinerated, while less than 10 percent gets recycled. A little less than a quarter is mismanaged, with some of it?leaking?into rivers and oceans." Recent studies reveal that plastic recycling facilities may be major sources of microplastic pollution, potentially harming the environment more than helping it. Only 9% of plastic globally is recycled, with US rates even lower. The potential health risks and environmental impact of microplastics are prompting some experts to reconsider current recycling methods. Exploring alternatives like waste-to-energy could be necessary to address our ongoing plastic waste challenges and provide much-needed energy sources. #TREADCoalition https://lnkd.in/gQ4xXCV2

Check out this study released in Science about how just 4 global policies could eliminate more than 90% of plastic waste and 30% of linked carbon emissions! The 4 main policies are: - Mandate new products be made with 40% post-consumer recycled plastic - Cap new plastic production levels at 2020 levels - Invest in plastic waste management - Implement a small fee on plastic packaging To find the official study and to read more about this, check out the link here: https://lnkd.in/eaEqegj9 #sustainability #carbon #carbonreduction #wastemanagement #carbonemissions #recycle

#innovationmonday Study finds four global policies could eliminate >90% of plastic waste and 30% of linked carbon emissions by 2050 ?? source: Phys Org ?? focus: #plasticpollution #carbonemissions Wow. Can this be true? Here are the 4 polices based on data insights. ? Mandate new products be made with 40% post-consumer recycled plastic ? Cap new plastic production at 2020 levels ? Invest significantly in plastic waste management—such as landfills and waste collection services ? Implement a small fee on plastic packaging https://buff.ly/3OfcIcW

This is why we care about solutions for Zero Waste! Nearly one-quarter of the world’s plastic waste is?actually mismanaged or littered (around 82 million tonnes). This means it’s NOT stored in secure landfills, recycled or incinerated. ?? One-quarter of that – 19 million tonnes – is?leaked to the environment. ???? 13 million tonnes to terrestrial environments, and ???? 6 million tonnes to?rivers or coastlines. ???? 1.7 million tonnes of this is then?transported to the ocean: 1.4 million tonnes from rivers, and 0.3 million tonnes from coastlines. The rest of the plastic waste that was leaked into aquatic environments accumulated in rivers and lakes. Source: ourworldindata.org https://lnkd.in/e5kjNvyU In the chart below you can see the path of plastic waste to the oceans. This comes from the OECD’s Global Plastic Outlook (2022). "Our aim is to revolutionize packaging and other disposable materials, as well as small parts and accessories, with 100% degradable and bio-compostable plastics," says Jayu Yang about the goals of the ambitious young company #Gr?nBl?, founded in 2021. Together with partners, Gr?nBl? A/S has set itself the goal of replacing single-use plastic with 100% compostable bioplastic. The name Gr?nBl? comes from the Danish word for green-blue and stands for the vision of making our blue planet greener again.

A new study published in?Science?has outlined a data-driven approach that, if implemented globally, could reduce plastic waste by over 90% by 2050. These strategies—including recycled content mandates, limits on virgin plastic production, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs, and design standards for reuse and recyclability—are not only feasible but essential. You can read about this study in this Newsweek article by Jeff Young. According to US Plastics Pact CEO ??Jonathan Quinn?? "the proposals in the study "can truly change the trajectory of plastic waste" if implemented in the treaty." If you are in NYC on December 4th, I hope you will join Quinn and Newsweek to discuss the "Future of Plastics." https://lnkd.in/gUNyB_Rc https://lnkd.in/gq5schq6 #CircularEconomy #PlasticsTreaty #ClientNews #events

These results demonstrate that care must be taken when formulating policies or interventions to reduce plastic use so that we do not inadvertently drive a shift to nonplastic alternatives with higher GHG emissions. For most plastic products, increasing the efficiency of plastic use, extending the lifetime, boosting recycling rates, and improving waste collection would be more effective for reducing emissions. #circulareconomy #sustainability #plasticsrecycling
