Eighty-two years ago today, March 13th in 1942, the Quartermaster Corps (QMC) of the United States Army begins training dogs for the newly established War Dog Program, or "K-9 Corps." The top canine hero of World War II was Chips, a German Shepherd who served with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division. Trained as a sentry dog, Chips broke away from his handlers and attacked an enemy machine gun nest in Italy, forcing the entire crew to surrender. The wounded Chips was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star and the Purple Heart; all of which were later revoked due to an Army policy preventing official commendation of animals. Read more on Chips, War Dogs and the birth of the K-9 Corps in Nancy Ward’s book available on Amazon @ https://lnkd.in/eGWdz3hH Heather Brush writes this about Nancy’s book… This book is based on the real life story of Chips the World War II K9 hero, from Pleasantville, NY. It is a tale that captures the young reader's attention, making the war something that can begin to be understood. Seeing the story from Chips' perspective adds to the innocent feel of learning this information for the first time. Throughout the book certain words are italicized and these can easily be looked up in the glossary at the back of the book. Unfamiliar terms like Axis Powers, and Allied Forces, civilian, mascot, and medic become things the reader can understand. Certainly this book should be used in classrooms but for any child aged nine and up who has an interest in dogs, the military, our nation's wars, or history, Nancy West's "Chips a Hometown Hero" is a must have. An exciting, interesting (and fact based!) story that will delight all dog lovers as a special canine tale, I highly recommend this book! #ww2 #wardogs #k9 #k9dogs

U.S. Army veteran Seth Miller used to put his expertise to work servicing tank hulls and turret mechanics, but now, he's an associate director of dealer process development and validation for International Motors. But whether for tanks or for vehicles, both roles are about promoting uptime, particularly for International's 'uptime advocates.' “My team writes all of their standard operating procedures, [working] on something in the system that we want to improve, and then we'll go work with IT to make those improvements happen,” Miller explained. But as if he wasn't busy enough, Miller has also advocated for companies to consider veterans for any number of roles: "You don't have to be a tank mechanic or a wheel vehicle mechanic—the skills that a vet has coming into the industry are going to help in any role," he said. "Just the discipline, the leadership in particular, they're all very transferable skills." For more on Miller's journey, see below. #truckingindustry #veteransday John Hitch

#TwoForTuesday of Bundeswehr service pistols: the Walther P1 & the H&K P8. ? As with many things in Germany after WWII, minor details of what was used by the Nazis were changed & then put back into use by the new Federal Republic of Germany. This was especially true of recycling #Government officials from evil Nazis into newly passionate lovers of #Democracy, but also with #Military #Weapons. ? The P1 is merely a Walther Arms, Inc. P38 with a lighter aluminum frame than the original #Steel. The P38 itself was a much simpler & less expensive replacement for the iconic Lugar pistol. While #Guns with only an 8-round magazine is quite dated today, it was one of the first double-action/single action pistols to enter military service. ? Compared to its contemporaries such as the M1911 & the various revolvers the British Army used, it’s a noticeable step forward in #Firearms #Technology, allowing a relatively untrained Soldier to safely carry the weapon with a loaded chamber due to both the manual #Safety & heavy double-action trigger for the first shot. ? In the 90’s despite the post-#ColdWar “peace dividends” leading to virtual disarmament by the Bundeswehr, they realized they needed to replace the P1. So they turned to Heckler & Koch GmbH to make a variant of their 9mm USP pistol with traditional rifling & translucent magazine. ? Yet instead of a normal USP with a 1911 style safety, where flipping the safety lever down disengages the safety; the Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) wanted a safety lever like the P1, where flipping the lever up disengages the safety. ? Aside from being a perfect example of stereotypical #German Weberian bureaucratic thinking resulting in absurd outcomes, I’d say it also shows that the #Bundeswehr thought their Soldiers were too stupid to learn a new safety. ? From my understanding the Bundeswehr Wir. Dienen. Deutschland. #SpecialForces have modified versions of the P8 with just a decocker, which I would say makes much more sense. ? Though at the end of the day, as much as people on AR15.com love to squabble about service pistols, they’re largely irrelevant on the battlefield. If you’re using a pistol in military combat, you’re probably 50 shades of boned anyways. ? For some reason Heckler & Koch USA has never #Imported the P8A1 civilian version to the US . So they they were only available through #Importing by other importers such as Texas Machine-Gun & Ordnance. Thanks to collectors, P8s used to command a premium. ? But then in a great example of Market Saturation, many importers decided to import large amounts of P8s, which led to a price collapse. They can now be found cheaper in the US than they can in #Germany & are typically cheaper than regular USPs because they’re an oddball only really relevant to firearms collectors & cloning autists like me. ? But since the manual safety can be deleted to make it decocker only, the price collapse is a great chance to get a high-quality HK pistol at a low price.
