According to the?United States US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), about 32% of the?trash is recycled?or composted, 12% is burned and 50% is buried in landfills. As of February, 2023, there are?over 2,600 #landfill?facilities located in the United States, with the majority in Southern and Midwestern United States. Given that we have made great advancements in waste management and recycling sectors, the garbage we put out into our environment is exponential in growth. https://lnkd.in/gbr4yz5m I always find it strange when governments are claiming that we need more sustainable practices and technology and yet when it comes to waste, they cannot think beyond the status quo. Landfills are disastrous for the environment, a poor use of land and encourage an "out of sight, out of mind" approach to waste. It would be much more beneficial for governments to encourage circular practices that replace landfills, rather than encourage them. We are mired in a system of ineffective recycling and poor waste management, and policies are set up to continue using that system. When landfills get closed and covered over, they continue to leach toxins in to the air, land and water. They may have grass covering them, but it merely hides the damage being caused underneath. It's time for us to rethink our waste management system and eliminate the need for landfills in a sustainable way. There are technologies out there that provide a far better solution than landfills, we just need to start incorporating them. #Carbotura #circularity #sustainability
