Last season, they boasted possession stats of 66.7% (58.7% this season) and 66.3% (65.9% this season) respectively. This possession-based approach has translated into tangible success last season, and now, Pirates leading the league with 21 points from 7 matches and Sundowns close behind with 18 points. Looking deeper into last season, the teams' possession strategies differ subtly. Pirates favour a more patient build-up with 167.34 lateral passes per 90 minutes, compared to Sundowns' 139.43. However, Sundowns are more direct in their forward passing (184.20 vs 180.45 per 90). This divergence in approach is reflected in their length of passing, with average lengths being the two shortest in the league (Pirates - 18.61m, Sundowns - 17.02m). Their average time on the ball is also among the longest in the league (Pirates - 17.3s, Sundowns - 16.0s). Both teams excel defensively too, with Pirates conceding just 2 goals in 7 matches and Sundowns 4 in 7. Their high possession rates contribute to a strong field tilt of 65.2% for Pirates and 64.8% for Sundowns, indicating territorial dominance. Control without goals is meaningless though, and both clubs lead the way in goals scored (Pirates 15, Sundowns 13), With both leading in goal conversions this season, with Pirates at 13% and Sundowns at 20%. Ribeiro and Makgopa have contributed 27% and 31% of their teams' goals, respectively. In comparison, Stellenbosch FC has a 10% conversion rate, Kaizer Chiefs 9%, and SuperSport United 4%. This is particularly impressive as Sundowns have taken the least shots per 90 minutes, while Chiefs have taken the most out of these four clubs. These statistics genuinely point to exciting times ahead as these teams compete both domestically and in the CAF Champions League. While their ability to control games through possession has been crucial in the PSL, it may not be as significant in continental competitions where a plethora of other factors come into play. As the season progresses, we can only hope for a title challenge that goes the distance. While Pirates and Sundowns have set the early pace, it would be too easy to rule out other clubs. The likes of Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United, and even dark horses like Stellenbosch FC could still enter the mix. ??
