One reason I focus on intercultural communication skills training and systemic inclusion strategy as a #DEIA consultant is proven by this video. #Healthcare, #HigherEducation, and #Nonprofit leaders, I love you. You're doing some great work. With that said: Your DEIA initiatives ain't going nowhere without basic diversity. No amount of training is going to help you figure out something like this example...IYKYK. After that, you'll need to know how to communicate effectively to work together as a team so stuff like this doesn't happen. What if this Black nurse hadn't asked more about what was going on? There is no substitute for a diverse leadership team and diverse workforce in the U.S. helping professions. And I mean various kinds of diversity, not just race. Hire PGM/disabled/queer/female consultants, c-suite leaders and board members to help guide your growth and development process. I still have some speaking, training and consulting spots available next spring, feel free to DM me if you want to connect. #RethinkRelationship #intersectionality #LeadershipDevelopment

This week I’ve been posting videos about why representation in medicine matters, and the negative downstream effects that can occur when adequate cultural competency isn’t included in patient care. Just dropped episode 4 of Ditch the Labcoat with Dr Mark Bonta and Dr David Carr, Emergency Medicine Physician. In the latest episode of #DitchTheLabCoat, Dr Mark Bonta sat down with Dr. David Carr MD-EM to pull back the curtain on the world of emergency medicine - a far cry from the dramatized TV chaos we're used to. Here's a sneak peek into what we uncovered in our heart-to-heart with Dr. David: ?? The Unseen Side of Emergency Care: Beyond the adrenaline-filled moments lies a realm of primary care, caring for marginalized communities, and the often unspoken advocacy work that shapes the fabric of this demanding specialty. ?? On-Call Stress vs. Seeking Normalcy: We delve into the personal sacrifices and stresses of being at the beck and call of the ER – the longing for 'normal' family life amidst the relentless demand for their expertise. ?? Universal Skills & Specialization: From the multitude of cases to the nuances of international disease patterns, we explore the dynamic tapestry of skills and specializations that equip emergency medicine physicians for their critical roles. We also touch on the pressing topics such as healthcare access in rural communities, the importance of understanding what constitutes a medical emergency, and the critical issue of burnout among emergency medicine specialists. Thank you for sharing and keeping this conversation in the forefront. I want to echo amd add my thoughts. Violence against workers, especially those in public safety and healthcare, is an escalating crisis that can no longer be dismissed as "part of the job." For too long, we have normalized the unacceptable by believing that exposure to violence is simply "just the way it is." This mindset must change—starting now! Every worker deserves to go to work feeling safe and to return home without physical or psychological injuries inflicted while serving others. It is not okay to accept any form of violence or intimidation as inevitable. We must raise our voices, keep these critical conversations in the forefront, and demand safer working environments for all workers. Throughout my career and advocacy, I have witnessed first-hand the prevalence of violence against paramedics and its devastating impacts on their health and well-being. The real impacts on those who serve and their families unquestionably highlight the urgency and importance of addressing this issue head-on. If you’re passionate about worker safety and want to be part of this critical dialogue, let’s do our part and commit to making workplaces safer for everyone. Join the conversation, share your thoughts, and let's foster a culture where violence is *never* considered a part of the job.

"It's puzzling that something that is objectively dangerous in a myriad of ways can be so casually dismissed as just 'part of the job'" I'm thrilled to share that my interview for Zach Cantor's Critical Levels podcast is now live. In this episode, we delve into the issue of #violence against #paramedics, highlighting the innovative research being led by Peel Regional Paramedic Services on this critical occupational health concern. Expect to learn about the prevalence of violence against paramedics, its impacts on their health and well-being, my thoughts on body armour and self-defence training, what I would do if I was 'chief for a day', and...much more. This was a great conversation. Zach is an excellent host who really brings out the key points on this topic. If you haven't listened before, Critical Levels is an outstanding podcast featuring insights from a wide range of experts on contemporary topics affecting paramedic practice and service delivery. Episodes are also eligible for CME through the Sunnybrook Centre for Prehospital Medicine. Listen to Episode 42 here: https://lnkd.in/gkd7tgEp
