What’s up, China? DeepSeek R1 just changed the game! A few days ago, DeepSeek dropped their R1 model, and it caused wild ripple effects. It feels like everyone’s talking about it and debates are filling up our feeds. And for good reason, this was a mic drop moment. DeepSeek, a one-year-old startup, revealed a ChatGPT-like model that delivers all the familiar capabilities at a fraction of the cost. They reportedly spent just $5.6 million training R1. For context, U.S. tech giants like OpenAI, Google, and Meta are burning through hundreds of billions on their models. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on this, and by Monday, the tech world was shaking: The Nasdaq plunged 3.6% - its steepest drop since September 2022. The Dow fell 369 points. Even the S&P 500 took a 2% hit. The timing is also dramatic.?Just days ago, Musk, Altman, and Trump unveiled a $500 billion AI infrastructure plan, positioning it as America’s definitive play for AI dominance. And then comes DeepSeek, straight out of left field, proving that innovation doesn’t always require a blank check. A small Chinese startup may have just beaten them at their own game—at a fraction of the cost. ?????? ?????? ???????????????? ?????? ????????????. Apple? ?? Watching from the sidelines. Its stock? Popped instead of sinking. ??????? For years, people mocked Apple for "missing the AI boat." Now? That strategy looks genius. With R1 proving that AI might one day become widely available at very low costs, why would Apple (or anyone) invest billions in proprietary models when they can just adapt an open-source one? ?????? ?????????? ????????’?? ??????????: ? Meta's open-source AI vision aligns perfectly with what DeepSeek is pushing. ? VCs are excited—Y Combinator’s Garry Tan even called it the start of “a thousand flowers blooming.” ? If you’re not familiar with that cluster of letters and numbers, you’re not alone – most people don’t immediately recognize this moniker for one of the most powerful new models to hit the AI world. No, it’s not a new virus. It’s AI. As with so much of what we’re seeing these days, context is everything. If you get behind the name, and into the origin of the model, you start to see more about what’s going on internationally, as leaders work toward industry innovations that are going to have a big impact on our world. What’s Under the Hood? The Yi series of models is made with 6-bit and 34-bit LLMs, which are both open source. There’s a sequence length of 4K, in a 34-billion parameter large training model that outperforms the 70 billion Llama 2 other Meta designs. A smaller 6-billion parameter model is also available. Behind the Project The company itself, 01.AI, is brand-new, having been founded this year by someone named Kai-Fu Lee. Lee is a Taiwanese businessman who was educated in the United States, and has experience at Apple, Microsoft and Google. After his involvement in business, he moved back across the world, relinquished his American citizenship and created a large venture capital fund while also innovating new products.

I just spent the weekend with 100s of Founders at Y Combinator’s AI retreat. 3 things I took away that I didn’t really understand before… Before I get into this, how “YC” is this video? An inspirational speaker delivering a talk about the future of AI and humanity…while a founder in the audience is just grinding on his startup ?? Seriously, though, on to what I took away from this weekend: 1. Reasoning models are a really big deal. They don’t have the same ‘fun’ factor as ChatGPT so it’s not getting the mass market attention, but it seems clear to me that these models are a very important step forward in smarter, more powerful AI. And progress here is accelerating. 2. Enterprises are investing massively in AI across the board. The move to the cloud was slow as it was met with resistance at each step. AI is (so far) the opposite. Everyone from CEOs to individual contributors are promising (and incentived) to adopt AI at record pace. 3. ‘It’s all just hype’ or ‘show me the AI revenue’ could not be more wrong. I met hundreds of founders, many of whom already had tens of millions of revenue in just the last year. From customer support tools, to life sciences software, to database infrastructure. And it’s clear we’ve barely scratched the surface. — The weekend was truly awesome. I got to meet ridiculously impressive early founders and hear from some real tech legends. The money folks are uncertain of the value of AI, lots of articles talking about the "wasted" money. I think they are not totally clear on the far reaching impacts this technology will have and it's a land grab right now for who establishes themselves in this new space.
