On Friday, I had the honour to brief Minister Bill Shorten and his team on the large-scale research I conducted into New Zealand citizens' use of government digital services. The study of more than 2,800 citizens explored many factors, including why many people cannot engage fully with government services. The findings were powerful as well as socially & economically very important: we need to find ways to not just digitise access to government services... we need to lead people through the processes. Today, Bill Shorten spoke at the press club and referenced the results of our study: "Research?on?the?New?Zealand?Government?services?found?that?if?filling?out?a?form?is?too?hard,?people?will?walk?away?often?with?a?feeling?that?the?government?is?deliberately?making?it?hard?for?them?to?claim?their?entitlements.?Or?in?other?words,?accessing?government?services?should?not?make?citizens?feel?stupid?or?stressed." - 21:20sec (Link: https://lnkd.in/g9h2SAnu) When policy-makers take the time to explore the data, explore the options, and get independent and broad feedback, we can create more robust and workable policies. So a big thank you to Bill Shorten and the team for taking the time. For transparency, the study was conducted independently, though with funding from the Australian ERP vendor TechnologyOne. The final report and data analytics dashboard from the study are available by request from TechnologyOne or IBRS. It was presented to the New Zealand local government summit early this year.
