Decolonising and Indigenising Music Education: First Peoples Leading Research and Practice by Dr. Te Oti Rakena (vocalist, researcher, and educator) This textbook, rooted in Indigenous experiences and research, highlights the stories often left out of traditional music curricula. While the Western Classical tradition is widely taught, other rich musical experiences are frequently overlooked. In the United States (and beyond), a deep-seated distrust exists—stemming from a skewed history shaped by those in power, predominantly white people. This history explains why Indigenous peoples and other communities of color might hesitate to share their stories, especially when the dominant culture often fails to accept them. Despite these challenges, Dr. Te Oti Rakena’s mission to help people find their voices has inspired the creation of this carefully crafted documentation. New article in The Critic co-authored with musicologist Eva Moreda Rodriguez, building in part upon earlier work and thought from both of us. Whilst there is plenty value in academia and scholarship engaging with practice, there is a real danger with too-great an elision of the distinction. In some ways the values of critical, dispassionate inquiry associated with scholarship are at cross-purposes with those of self-promotion and conformity often associated with practical work. The article also includes material on the reasons for the growth in the number of practitioners in UK academia, and in the case of music, how this can work to marginalise scholarship. Also on the field of contemporary composition, whose practitioners have a representation in academia which hugely exceeds any student interest, on the cult-like veneration of John Cage in music academia, as one who legitimises removal of teaching of basic composition skills, and empty rhetoric about ‘creativity’ divorced from technique. https://lnkd.in/eg98e6mC

Master program Theater and Music Management at the HfMDK Frankfurt Aesthetics/ Cultural Theory II - part 2: Max Weber (1864-1920) I would be very interested to read your thoughts on this quote. After we resumed the course in cultural theory with Siegmund Freud last week, in today's session we logically looked at the great Erfurt sociologist and political economist Max Weber. Max Weber, Sigmund Freud, Friedrich Nietzsche and Karl Marx are not wrongly described as the gravediggers of the old European conservatism they denounced and the gatekeepers of modernity around the turn of the century 1900. The focus of our reflections and discussions today was the text “The Protestant Ethic and the spirit of capitalism” from 1905 - including a wonderful presentation by our excellent student Ann-Sophie Reiser. I strongly recommend reading this text, if you find enough time. Max Weber almost prophetically analyzes the emergence of capitalism against the background of specific aspects in Europe, especially of the pietistic or puritanical, mostly ascetic Protestantism prevailing especially in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Scandinavia at this time. This Puritanism is also largely responsible for the cultural and religious development on the East Coast and Midwest of the USA. Anyone who wants to analyze today's social and cultural conditions in capitalist societies and predict their future developments in detail should have studied this text of Weber combined - or not - with some aspects of Marx's theory of added value. It is important for our students to be able to internalize and apply these texts, as many of them may work in an international context. In order to understand the development of culture and their institutions abroad, one should, like Max Weber, reflect on the foundations of society and the development of its peculiarities. Which religious and cultural foundations are relevant and to what extent are they the cause of specific structures of cultural landscapes? They differ strongly enough from country to country to arouse our interest and curiosity. In the post I highlighted the last section from the fifth chapter of the text “Asceticism and the spirit of capitalism”, which has not lost its validity even today, 120 years after its publication.

Yesterday Australian Society for Music Education (ASME) NSW and Drama NSW along with NESA appeared in an extra hearing for the current Joint Select Committee Inquiry into Arts and Music Education to talk about the draft NSW HSC music and drama syllabi. Huge congratulations to ASME NSW and Drama NSW who did a brilliant job and also super impressive from the parliamentarians. Our colleagues explained clearly and succinctly what the issues are and why there is an open letter from 31 academics and a petition which already has over 5,500 signatures. The response from NESA was deeply concerning (1:38:30 ish onwards), a small concession to drama concerns but no acknowledgement of the huge issues in the music syllabi which if implemented will be disastrous for Music 1 enrolments. Given that NSW has 5,000 students taking music (7% of the cohort) and 85% of those do Music 1, this is hugely significant nationally. https://lnkd.in/giYWHehK Please share the petition widely (and if you’re a NSW resident, including under 18 years, please sign) - if it gets to 20,000 signatures, it has to be debated in parliament. https://lnkd.in/gpuer-TY

At the same time, our initial user study of one of the mentioned projects will appear at the Singapore 2024 IEEE Conference on Artificial Intelligence this summer! The next technical paper will show more technical details beyond user research, so let's look forward to seeing how AI integrates with music:) ??
A university is not complete without performance arts. Today's Westwood Lecture is given by Professor Kristen Yeon-Ji Yun Purdue University’s Music Department. A concert cellist who recently joined Purdue faculty as we roll out the music degree, she also collaborated with colleagues on projects at the intersections of AI and music performance.

Congratulations! Great Violinist Lakshminaraya Subrahmanyam for Padmavibhushan Award! Subramaniam Lakshminarayana was born in Madras, Madras Presidency, British India, to V. Lakshminarayana Iyer and Seethalakshmi, both accomplished musicians on 23rd July 1947. He lived in Jaffna during his younger years, taking up music studies before the age of five. He began training in violin under the tutelage of his father, Professor V. Lakshminarayana. "Mani", as he is fondly known by fellow musicians and his family, gave his first public performance at the age of six. His uncles include Ramnad Raghavan and Ramnad Krishnan. His brothers are also acclaimed musicians, and include the violinist-composers L. Shankar (alias. Shenkar), and the late L. Vaidyanathan. He has released recordings with both. Subramaniam developed a passion for music as well as science from a young age, studying Medicine and acquiring his M.B.B.S. at Madras Medical College. He registered as a General Practitioner, before deciding to pursue music full-time. He has a master's degree in Western classical music, which he acquired at the California Institute of Arts. Addendum: The Subramaniam story many may not know at all. After a degree in modern medicine ( MBBS)from Madras Medical College, Chennai in Tamil Nadu, he applied for MA music in Mysore university, which promptly rejected the application on the grounds that he had no BA degree in music. But later California Institute of Arts ,US offered admission with financial assistance and world got perhaps the first taste of fusion music. Now we are ,to some extent compensating, for the wrong things done to this great musician by conferring him the Second Highest Civilian award of the Nation, Padma Vibhushan! Orthodoxy in India's systems are and were certainly an annihilator of innovation and experimentation .There is too much of it in university , college education and work places. This kept India an under dog in technological innovations. We need to whole heartedly promote interdisciplinary and flexible education systems. New Education Policy ( NEP 2020) needs to be welcomed and implemented at the earliest. Even in some of the discussions which are live now also in social media, Researchers and truck drivers are treated as 9-5 workers! The utterance of "How long will you stare at your wife?"shows the mindset now also prevailing among the top executives of our country ,that wives are not supposed to work and they should be housewives ,now euphemistically called as homemakers! An inner hidden dimension of this statement, not seen seriously discussed in any social media so far! We have come a long way, post independence, but still have not come out of the orthodoxy in many domains . If we are to leapfrog as a Nation,we need to attend to this, urgently. Values ,Ethics,Legacy, Culture and Heritage should not be confused with orthodoxy! We need to segregate and understand and appreciate it separately and encourage the good ones !
