Today, on World Hunger Day, we are reminded of the alarming statistics that emphasize the urgency of addressing global hunger. According to the State of Food Insecurity (SOFI) report in 2023, 783 million people in the world lived with chronic hunger in 2022, and even more concerning, over 3.1 billion people worldwide – or 42 percent – were unable to afford a healthy diet. In response to these numbers, our UK team at Benchmark Gensuite is taking action by donating items to a local food bank. It's a small gesture with a significant impact, and we are proud to contribute to alleviating hunger in our community. At IMS of Smithfield, we're proud to partner with City Harvest London, working together to reduce food waste and support communities in need. ?? Through our recent donation, we provided: ● 1.5 tonnes of food to City Harvest’s food rescue operation ● 3,600 meals delivered to charities feeding their communities ● 5 tonnes of GHG emissions prevented by rescuing food for human consumption This partnership aligns with our values of sustainability and community care, ensuring that good food finds its way to people, not landfills. Food poverty affects thousands across London, forcing many to choose between essentials like heating their homes or eating a meal. A staggering 1.6 million people in Scotland suffer food poverty. That’s 1 in 6 adults. Yet, over 3 million tonnes of food wasted across the food industry each year is good-to-eat when it’s discarded. Astonishing figures that inspired a team of employee volunteers from ScottishPower Renewables to help a Glasgow charity that works with local supermarkets to redistribute surplus food to small charities, schools & community groups. It was an eye opening day for the team, seeing the shear scale of food that came in one door and later, being caged, sorted and weighed to go out of another door to local charities that help people in real need. Employee volunteering can take you to places & introduce you to new people. It adds value to your life, widens your horizons and brings you closer to issues in your own community. Could employee volunteering give you and your colleagues food for thought?
