As a current delegate of the Into:Careers Accelerator Programme, I’ve had the privilege of participating in a series of Fireside Chats. The last session was led by Shantel Love, and it was pure ???????? from start to finish! Tables were rocked, diamond gems were dropped and longstanding limiting beliefs were broken that day. Huge thanks to Augustina A. for facilitating such a powerful and practical workshop! One of the topics we covered was the growing phenomenon that is personal branding. I love Shantel's definition and have been mulling over it, quite a bit recently. I would also add that our personal brands are extensions of our voices and reflections of our personalities. In other words, our personal brands shape the way we show up in the world at large; and not just the boardroom or the marketplace. I believe it’s crucial not to fall into the trap of defining our personal brands by a job title, career goal or professional path. All of these things could change or be stripped away from us at any given moment and without any prior warning. A big part of building a personal brand that outlives your achievements, is: ?? Knowing who you are ?? Sharing what you know ?? Knowing what sets you apart and why ?? Knowing and owning what you bring to the table Here are a few questions I ask myself when I’m in personal branding brainstorm mode: ? Identity: who am I without the accolades and awards? ? Legacy: what do I want to be remembered for? ? Expertise: what do I aim to be known for? ? Impact: How do I want people to feel after they have interacted with me? Building my brand is a powerful thing; at first glance, it may look like I am not in the boat with the company I work for. Conforming to the identity of a more prominent brand is a natural human instinct. I do it all the time. Especially when they pay me money to be in their boat. The power is when a personal brand aligns with the company brand. When I work with a company I believe in, it becomes a win-win relationship. I discovered good leaders embrace team members with strong personal brands. They are not threatened and want what they have to offer. Here's what you can do to align your brand with a company you believe in. 1. Leverage Social Media: Use LinkedIn, Twitter, or a personal blog to share your expertise, industry insights, and successes. Highlight your role and contributions to your company’s success without overshadowing the company’s brand. 2. Industry Networking: Attend industry events, conferences, and webinars. Speak on panels or participate in discussions. This positions you as a thought leader in your field. 3. Create Valuable Content: Write articles, create videos, or start a podcast related to your industry. Share your knowledge and experiences, indirectly promoting you and your company. 4. Showcase Your Achievements: Don’t be shy about sharing your accomplishments.
