From the Journal; Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired the eclectic dine-in theater chain Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, a bet on the future of moviegoing. The deal, an unusual example of a studio owner buying a theater chain, gives Sony control over a popular date-night destination that bills itself as a magnet for cinephiles. Most Alamo locations are in big U.S. cities like New York; Los Angeles; Austin, Texas; and Boston. It comes amid a summer box office slump and as #Hollywood grapples with how to convince audiences to leave their couch to go to the movies. Alamo, which offers a blend of mainstream and lesser-known #films, is North America’s seventh-largest theater chain, with locations in 25 metro areas and more than 10 million visitors annually, Sony said. At Alamo theaters, moviegoers can order food and drinks, including movie-themed alcoholic beverages, which are served seat-side. The deal marks Sony’s first foray into live events, with the establishment of a new division known as Sony Pictures Experiences. For years, Sony has licensed the rights to some of its most-popular franchises to live-events producers overseas. For now, the new division will focus on the moviegoing experience. More than half of Alamo’s revenue comes from concession sales, and perks including food and drink have helped the brand develop a loyal fan base, Sony said. #cinema Movie theaters are increasingly offering creative menus and new attractions to make trips to the theater more exciting. Streamers and studios are also investing more in experiences as a way to deepen fans’ connections to beloved franchises and make additional revenue off ticket sales, merchandise and concessions.?

There is something magical about walking into a theater for a movie. It is an experience unlike almost any other: losing oneself to the darkness, feeling the bass in your chest. The world fades away for 90 minutes, and maybe that’s part of the charm. But what if you could create that experience in your own home? Home theaters are becoming more and more of a reality for many as it becomes easier to find and stream high-quality films, and the costs of the equipment necessary to recreate that theater experience in your own home are within reach. Brian Duggan, co-owner of Union Place, is no stranger to both the movie-going experience and home theaters. “I live, eat, and breathe these things,” says Brian, and here, he offers us a tour through the “ultimate” home theater. The ultimate home theater is a “dedicated room with a projection system primarily used for watching sports or TV,” says Brian. While many spaces, including some home theaters, are designed with many purposes in mind, to Brian, the ultimate home theater is a space entirely dedicated to the TV-watching experience. Learn more on how Brian can help you create your own unique home theater experience and read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/gU6expkV . . . . #springinmn?#springfun?#homeremodel?#homebuild?#homedesign?#exploremn?#onlyinmn?#lakeminnetonkalife?#CLLakeMinnetonka?#CityLifestyle?#LakeMinnetonkaLifestyle?#LakeMinnetonka?#LakeLife?#CityLife?#LiveLocal?#smallbusiness?#SupportLocal?#Minnesota?#Local?#MN

This article asks an interesting question and maybe it is a glass-half-full situation. Yes, exhibitors leaning on landlords to lower rents is part of the explanation - as WSJ recently pointed out, it is hard to re-purpose cinemas into anything else. But my suspicion is that lowering seating numbers with the introduction of recliners, doubling down on premium and introducing wider location-based entertainment options (climbing walls!) also has something to do with this. No doubt this and more being discussed at CinemaCon https://lnkd.in/e2yCEMpX

Movie theaters big and small need to invest in picture and sound. Especially, when it comes to branded theaters that are designated as “premium experiences.” Went to a local theater tonight while visiting family and I’m shocked at the poor quality of the PLF screen. (I will not name the chain.) The theater had lighting underneath the screen that illuminated the bottom corners of the picture and made those areas difficult to view. Additionally, the whole screen had a hazy/cloudy sheen to it. So much so that someone I was sitting with asked if the film was meant to look like that. (Having seen the film before, I know it was not.) I know that the theatrical industry has been hit hard by the pandemic and then the dual Hollywood strikes. I know that product has been limited and only recently coming out at a pre-pandemic pace. However, theaters need to have systems in place so that moviegoers can have a true theatrical experience. It’s hard enough to convince people to leave their couches to come out to see movies, it’s even harder when the experience is lackluster and reinforces why they usually stay home. 2025 and 2026 have major blockbuster films on the slate that demand a big screen experience. If the industry has a hope of getting back to $10 billion in domestic ticket sales, then a trip to the movies needs to be better than a trip to the couch.

What can you expect in terms of recovery of the movie theater industry in 2025 with all film industry labor strikes in the rear view mirror? Improved box office sales for sure but not necessarily the drastic improvement we all want to see for our embattled theater chains that are barely able to meet contract rent obligations. U.S. and Canadian theaters finished 2024 with ticket sales down 3.3% to $8.75 billion compared to 2023, according to analyst Paul Dergarabedian at Comscore, Inc. This year’s lineup of films is forecast to lift domestic ticket sales to $9.7 billion, the highest since the global pandemic, according to an estimate from Gower Street Analytics. The National Association of Theatre Owners predicts that at least 110 movies should be released in 2025, up from 94 last year. That’s certainly an improvement over recent years but not significant enough to lift theater sales to its prepandemic luster.

Doom and gloom has turned into hope that the?movie theater industry?can survive the aftermath of the pandemic and labor strikes. — The stronger-than-expected finish to the summer movie season has led to cautious optimism, especially given how the summer started. —?"Inside Out 2"?became the highest-grossing animated movie ever, giving Pixar Animation Studios its first hit in years.?"Deadpool & Wolverine"?became the highest-grossing R-rated film ever and reenergized Marvel Studios. At the same time, most of the major theater chains are on better financial footing: — Cinemark, the third-biggest theater chain in the U.S., has seen its stock more than double this year. —?Regal, whose parent Cineworld Cinemas Ltd emerged out of bankruptcy,?raised $250 million?to upgrade more than 30 of its locations. — Even AMC Theatres, which has?flirted?with?bankruptcy, was able to?restructure more?than $2 billion of its debt. "Next summer will be a very clear window into where the industry is at compared to where we left off in 2019," Jeff Bock tell me: Read more at Axios Pro https://lnkd.in/enGCrpcP
