Today, I came across a video that left a deep impression on me—a moment that transcends sports and speaks to the very essence of humanity. In a match involving FC Porto, a player had the perfect opportunity to score a goal. The stakes were high, the game was on, and every second mattered. But as he raced towards the ball, a defender running beside him suddenly fell, injured. The referee hadn’t blown the whistle; play was still active. The Porto player could have easily taken the shot and secured the goal, but instead, he did something remarkable: he stopped. This was more than just an act of fair play; it was a powerful demonstration of empathy, integrity, and respect. It was an act that reminded everyone watching that, at the end of the day, humanity matters more than winning. The commentator called him a true “shmeker,” a word that captures a unique mix of charm, grace, and sportsmanship. Moments like these teach us that real strength is shown not just in competition, but in compassion. Whether on the field or in our daily lives, it's this kind of empathy that makes us better teammates, better leaders, and better people. Let’s take this as a reminder to pause, look around, and show understanding for those who might be struggling—even when we have every chance to push forward for our own gain. Because in a world where winning often takes center stage, it’s empathy that truly sets us apart. #FairPlay #Empathy #Humanity #Shmeker https://lnkd.in/eVPr7dX8

How Punching Above Our Weight Can Hurt Balancing Growth and Community in New Zealand's MMA Industry After completing my recent research paper on the regulatory factors affecting the business practices of global MMA promotions, particularly the UFC and ONE Championship, I'm left thinking about how these issues resonate here in Aotearoa New Zealand. As a small and distant market, our MMA industry faces unique challenges. Our geographic isolation can limit our fighters' access to larger opportunities and create barriers to entry in global promotions. But beyond the logistical challenges, there's something even more significant at play: the unique dynamics of our community. The combat sports community is tight-knit, where relationships are strong and personal connections run deep (in multiple directions). While this is one of our greatest strengths, it also presents a challenge when it comes to commercialising our sport. There’s a delicate balance between growing our industry and maintaining the values that make our community special. The drive for commercial success can sometimes seem like it must come at the expense of the relationships and trust built over the years. As I reflect on the global antitrust issues facing the MMA industry, particularly how large organisations can wield significant influence, it raises a critical question for us here in New Zealand: could regulation help ensure that our industry grows in a way that benefits everyone? Could—or should—we lean on regulation to provide a framework that encourages competition, supports diverse opportunities, and protects the integrity of our sport and community? In New Zealand, we have a unique opportunity to shape our MMA industry in a way that reflects our values of fairness, community, and inclusivity. By exploring how thoughtful regulation might support a healthy and vibrant ecosystem, we can ensure that our growth benefits all players—fighters, gyms, promoters, and fans alike. #inyourcorner #cornerinsight #mma #combatsports #sportslaw #newzealandsports #sportregulation #sportbiz #womeninsports Photo: View from our seats, overseeing the first HEX FS held in New Zealand.

Thanks for sharing Siddharth DEY. this post really touched me today, That 3 letter word "ego" can often get in the way of healthy communication, especially in team environments. When people start to focus on their individual pride or sense of superiority, they can forget that collaboration and mutual respect are what truly drive success. Ego clashes create a toxic atmosphere, turning what should be productive partnerships into power struggles. Being "grateful", is a powerful antidote to this. When we stop to appreciate the opportunities and gifts we’ve been given, we can shift our mindset from one of entitlement to one of humility and connection. Gratitude reminds us that success isn’t a solo journey; it's often a result of many factors—other people’s support, timing, and even luck. If more people took a moment to reflect on that, perhaps they’d engage with each other from a place of understanding and respect rather than competition and ego. A reminder for us all to treat others with kindness, especially when things are going well with you.
Possibly the only person on LinkedIn who is NOT a leader, Influencer, motivated, result oriented, achiever, visionary, etc etc!
“Down Syndrome but high sportsmanship and highest humanity" Para-karate champion Farzad Safavi Vardin demonstrated what true sportsmanship is really like. He was the winner of the gold medal at the 2023 Para-Karate Championship K22 in the ‘Intellectually Impaired Male’ category. After winning the match, Farzad Safavi Vardin saw that his opponent was visibly upset after the loss. After being declared the winner, the champion raised his hand. However, Vardin went over to his opponent and raised his hand in an act of true sportsmanship. There is so much to learn from this world. When egos are low! When there is no superiority complex! And when you don't try to do anything special. Just be a human! With that note, wishing you all a wonderful Week ahead, Goodfellas!!
