We include portions of this book across multiple U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) programs. Edited by our very own alumnus Nathan Finney, PhD and published by Army University Press this is a useful introduction, refresher and guide for the strategist and practioner of operational art. It includes classical approaches to more modern and perhaps controversial ones (i.e. is there really an "institutional" level of war?). Chapter 9 "Practical Startegists" is a must read for any planner. TOP quote: "General Staff officers employ their perspective and knowledge to translate imprecise, general and uncertain strategic guidance into meaningful, precise, specific and certain direction to enable execution by subordinate organizations without sacrificing flexibility or falling prey to oversimplification (p. 119)." What do "Batman and Robin" and "The Godfather" have to do with Multidomain Operations? Well, not much, but our special guests weave in some cultural icons to trace the history of MDO and the evolving learning process ongoing in the Joint Force. The awesome U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) #oparch podcast team hosted our very own U.S. Army Combined Arms Center CG and U.S. Army Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate (CADD) Director discuss FM 3-0 and MDO. Why MDO? -- (1) our adversaries are contesting us in areas we once dominated and took for granted, (2) some of the "basics" have changed, and (3) we need a new model to cope with the new scope, scale and methods forces are actually experiencing in contemporary combat. Listen in for more! Available on Apple and Spotify. As a three-time CoS (2 yrs 2nd Infantry Division - Korea, 2 yrs Eighth Army (Official) and as XO/assistant to US Army TRADOC CoS) this book struck me as an accurate assessment of the role. Though the scope of my experiences could not match the incredible magnitude of WH CoS, the processes, roles and functions were quite familiar. The CoS, in civilian or military context, helps frame decisions, preserves the leader’s time for things that matter, act as honest broker, integrate and lead a staff. The measure of a staff’s functionality, effectiveness and efficiency usually turns to how well the Chief is doing his or her job. My TOP quote: “The people who don’t succeed as White House Chief of Staff are people who like the ‘Chief’ part of the job and not the ‘staff’ part. You’ve got to remember you’re staff even though you’re powerful.” (Jim Baker, CoS to Ronald Reagan) U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) | The Army University | U.S. Army Combined Arms Center | Army University Press

Congratulations to our own Robert Leach on the Army Chief of Staff's selection via The Harding Project to include your #innovation article in the Army University Press "Chief of Staff of the Army Recommended Articles," for March 2024. The Harding Project is the Army's initiative to revitalize publications and renew professional military writing to foster discussion and debate on various military topics. Rob's original article "The Four Pillars of Tactical Innovation: A Path For Impactful Disruption" was published by the Modern War Institute at West Point in early February and addressed the essential role of bottom-up innovation, or as we call it, "innovation in the dirt," by empowering the frontline to develop and integrate new innovative solutions for our warfighters. In the article, Rob describes the four critical pillars of tactical innovation: ground-up ideation, rapid prototyping, a deliberate fusion of technology and tactics, and the emergence of novel concepts. #innovation #Soldiers #frontline #bottomup?

I used to think military orders were never questioned, so my desire to listen to my team didn't fit this model. But an admiral in a podcast inspired me! Lo?c Finaz, a former admiral and ex-director of the école de Guerre, challenged my assumptions in his book published in 2020. For you and me, an order is not a request; it must be followed to the letter by the recipient. In the military, this is true only in wartime, not peacetime. In peacetime, orders and directives are discussed, thanks to feedback and experiences. Just like in a company! At every level, everyone is heard and contributes their expertise and insights. Generals during national committees, section leaders with their non-commissioned officers, and team leaders with their soldiers. Nearly all topics are discussed during these meetings, committees, and consultations. Through these exchanges, the trust necessary for following orders on the field is built. One phrase in particular stood out to me: "The values we seek in someone only have value in pairs." Indeed, collaboration is essential for generating good ideas! The military world has inspired me through this content, which I highly recommend. What’s your vision of hierarchy in the workplace?
