Among the four most influential things to come out of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the past 25 years? According to Boston Globe Media: FIRST. “FIRST alumni are 17 percent more likely to declare a major in a STEM-related field in college than their high school peers who took math and science courses, but didn’t participate in the competition.” What began as a small engineering competition in Manchester, New Hampshire founded by prolific inventor Dean Kamen and patterned after a robot-building course at MIT pioneered by the late Dr. Woodie Flowers, is now making a global impact on millions of youth, inspiring them to not only start exploring STEM from a young age, but to pursue an ever-expanding arena of STEM careers after high school graduation. First has shaped my childhood. From First Lego League in elementary school all the way up to First Robotics Competition today. I will go to college with experience coding, with CAD and design, CnC, and a full shop of equipment through Engineers of Tomorrow EOT 2783 in La Grange, Kentucky. I will be able to enter a shop at ease from day 1 thanks to experience I got in our community robotics club. We've gone to competition, we've won, we've lost, and we did it all as a team. My engineering career will be owed, in part, to the mentors and sponsors at FIRST. Thanks FIRST, and thanks Massachusetts Institute of Technology #morethanrobots and a special thank you to the sponsors of every community robotics team around the globe. You make a difference.
