It’s interesting to watch this derailment on what appears to be 1435 mm gauge track. In tests that we did on QR 1067 mm gauge track years ago the wheels lifted off the high rail. The ratio of coupler height to track gauge is such that the ratio of the lateral component of the coupler forces to the wagon mass needs to be only 0.63 for wheel lift on 1067 gauge compared with 0.82 on 1435 gauge. The wheels are therefore likely to lift off the high rail first however flange climb on the low rail becomes more likely the higher the wheels are lifted due to the reduction in the effective flange angle. Track shift is likely as well as derailment due to the low downward force on the sleepers from the light wagons. The lateral irregularities in the track that can be seen in the video may have been a result of track shift from the high lateral forces.

The sequence is as follows: 7C.6.14 Brace position: ?7C6.14.1 Occupants in forward-facing seats adopt an erect brace position. ?7C6.14.2 Occupants in aft-facing seats adopt an erect brace position with the head placed firmly against the head rest or seat back. ?7C6.14.3 In both cases hands either grip the outer immersion suit or the seat. Knees are pressed together, feet slightly apart and heels slightly forward of the seat.
