We are thrilled to share that our contribution to the Hornsey Depot Bogie Drop project has been shortlisted for the Innovation Award at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) London Awards 2024. This facility pioneers a cutting-edge approach to bogie replacements, greatly improving efficiency and reducing downtime. Its innovative design features an external crane system that effortlessly moves across three tracks, suspending trains for quick removal of old bogies and installation of new ones. This streamlined process not only boosts productivity but also sets a new benchmark in railway maintenance by minimising disruption and optimising operations. INVVU served as the Multi-Discipline Designer, Engineering Lead, and Principal Designer for the Bogie Drop Extension. Starting with site surveys and detailed design, the team secured final approvals within an accelerated 5-month timeline. The project required complex civil engineering with near-zero error tolerance, overcoming strict site and time constraints. Precision in Motion: Sliding an Underpass into Place with Engineering Excellence An impressive and efficient engineering feat involved sliding a massive concrete rail underpass into position using a method called box-jacking. This technique was employed for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) expansion project at sites like Urban Avenue and Covert Avenue in New York. Instead of traditional bridge installation methods, which can disrupt train service for extended periods, the box-jacking approach allowed the 2,000-ton concrete structure to be slid precisely into place over a weekend. Hydraulic jacks pushed the pre-cast concrete box into the excavated area, with teams monitoring alignment down to millimeter precision. By minimizing disruption, this technique not only reduced installation time but also exemplified a modern approach to rail infrastructure that could benefit other projects nationwide. Prior to APEC meeting- Global Construction has been engaged to improve designated section of the Jackson's International Airport in which Triax been utilized saving construction time and cost by reducing pavement layer thickness required by design while increasing its functional life. Triax- of which Markham Culvert is the main supplier is to introduce Lateral Restrain to the placed pavement material while vertical impacts induced by transient load is sustained when placing passed PI- CBR- and Grading etc...of the material. Most pavement fails either for roads or aerodrome is simply due to the laterial movement of placed materials even it has been well compacted beyond required MDD and other test passed. I would say tension of which the pavement experience cannot be avoided unless placing material like triax- progressive impacts can cause failures of which longitudinal crack could be one of many.
