Last December, we were asked by Studio 8 1/2 to produce images for a competition project in Finland. We had a blast with this project due to the thought-provoking and far-from-banal architecture. The building design, materials, and the wild nature that embraces the building and is typical of that region form an incredible dialog. We were able to exploit this in the best possible way. As I had my desk crit with professor Tomas Tapias earlier this week, he said something that has resonated with me all week. The crucial difference between an architect and an artist, said Professor Tapias, lies in their reasoning. While artists can arrange anything and label it as art, architects must justify every design choice with solid reasoning. When design choices are rooted in logic rather than mere aesthetics, they become compelling selling points for a project. As architects, we're constantly questioned about our decisions, and aligning aesthetics with logic unlocks the key to exceptional architectural work.
