Ah, Thursdays! Who remembers those carefree days we had as children when playtime was everything? Today, I reminisce about classic childhood games that, unknown to us, were keeping us healthy and active! My mum usually preferred us playing outside to being glued to the television. We thought she was just trying to stop us from bothering her so much but she was helping us stay healthy. How many of these games did you play? ??Suchman (Police and Thief) My siblings and I would chase each other around the compound, hearts pounding, lungs burning. This game was a fantastic cardio workout in disguise! ??Baba suwe (Hopscotch) We meticulously drew squares on the ground, then hopped from one to another, building imaginary houses. This activity improved our balance and coordination. ??Kite Flying This kept us outdoors, promoting exercise (running, manoeuvring), reducing stress as we focused on the kite's flight, and aiding Vitamin D absorption as we were exposed to sunlight. As an adult, I realize that these games weren't just a way to pass the time; they were the best forms of exercise. We were getting so much from those activities; exercise, developing physical and mental skills, and most importantly, having fun with friends and family. Today, structured exercise can sometimes feel like a chore. It should not be so; you can take a cue from the joy of the movement we had as children. Find activities you enjoy—dancing, a brisk walk, a jog etc. This improves your chances of being consistent and increases your chance of getting the desired effects in your body. We often talk about the importance of unstructured play for young children, but we can all benefit from time to relax and enjoy unstructured time. Let’s try to balance activities with down time. Teachers: Take needed time to recharge, read for enjoyment, and have fun with family and friends. Families: Spend time connecting with children and extended family. Show your children how important it is to play – and to rest. Everyone: Try new things, like art, music, games, sports, or gardening.
