Attracting, retaining and growing talent, I would argue are the top 3 "burning platforms" of every hospital CEO and C-suite in this country whether an academic, rural or urban, inner-city hospital. Reimbursement rates from CMS and private insurers, the evolution to value-based care or, an assortment of clinical delivery challenges (sepsis, rehospitalization rates, outcomes, etc...), all are subsumed by the rising costs associated with staffing, onboarding and retention of healthcare workers. Hospitals and healthcare facilities are in the "human capital" business. There is an "arms race" occurring to find scarce talent, train them both cognitively and non-cognitively (soft-skills) and then retain and "grow" them and have those clinicians operate at the top of their degree training. Examining the BLS data or state data bases as to the discrepancy between the societal and staffing needs for all clinicians and allied health workers and the actual supply is extremely sobering. This supply and demand imbalance requires every hospital to adopt a robust healthcare workforce strategy to address their specific needs and to be proactive in finding solutions.
This post sheds light on a critical issue confronting hospital and healthcare leaders: the challenge of attracting, retaining, and developing talent. The recruitment and onboarding expenses linked to hiring clinical and patient care staff are notably high, further compounded by elevated turnover rates. Hospitals rely on various avenues to fulfill their staffing requirements but struggle to cope with the frequent vacancies that plague the industry. Student rotations play a crucial role in healthcare facilities' efforts to pinpoint potential hires or candidates for residency programs. Although not a singular solution, engaging with rotating students forms a substantial component in mitigating the broader healthcare workforce scarcity.

How to Choose the Best Extracurriculars for Your Med School Application ???? Extracurricular activities are an essential part of your med school application—they show admissions committees who you are beyond your grades and test scores. But how do you choose the right ones? Here’s a guide to help you: Focus on Quality, Not Quantity Med schools prefer seeing depth in a few activities rather than a long list of superficial ones. Prioritize Clinical Experience Shadowing, volunteering in hospitals, or working as a scribe are great ways to gain exposure to patient care. Admissions committees want to see that you understand the realities of working in medicine. ???? Bonus points if you get to present or publish your findings! ???? Don’t Forget Leadership and Service Show your commitment to serving others through community service or leadership roles. Leading a club or starting a new initiative can highlight your ability to work with others and take initiative. ???? Pursue Your Passions Not everything has to be medically related! If you’re passionate about sports, music, or community activism, pursue those interests. Med schools value well-rounded applicants who bring unique perspectives. ???? ?
