Evolving Regulation: A Snowball Effect Over just the last few years, environmental regulations have been tightening across the globe. In the US, five states have passed new EPR regulations, with bills on the floor in at least nine others. In California, the newly minted regulations specify that “recycled content” exclusively refers to PCR. This PCR standard will set the bar for companies with national reach. It can determine its fate—whether it will end up recycled or in a landfill. Why do I believe that eco-friendly labels are the only sensible direction? Here are three main reasons: 1. Labels MUST support recycling. Poorly chosen labels can effectively prevent packaging from being recycled, causing it to end up in a landfill instead of being repurposed. Labels that are easy to remove or made from materials compatible with recycling processes are essential for a closed-loop system. Only such labels increase the chances that the packaging can be recycled rather than discarded. And it’s not just about good intentions anymore—EU regulations mandate that by 2030, all packaging on the market must be recyclable, reusable, or compostable. Otherwise, products may fail to meet environmental standards, leading to additional fees for producers and distributors. Choosing the right labels is not just about being eco-friendly; it’s also about complying with upcoming regulations that are reshaping the packaging market. 2. Labels made from recycled materials help conserve natural resources. Labels made from secondary materials, such as recycled paper, granulate, or agricultural waste, help reduce the demand for virgin resources. This supports the circular economy by repurposing waste and contributing to the reduction of natural resource use, such as wood and fossils. 3. Eco-friendly labels are a necessity for modern brands. Consumer awareness of environmental issues is growing. More and more people are paying attention to how the products they buy are packaged. Studies show that customers are much more likely to choose products with eco-friendly packaging and are willing to pay more for items that do not excessively burden the environment.
