Whitney brought to Festival 25 years of retail experience for Fortune 100 organizations, and leadership experience spanning the grocery, general merchandise, convenience and online channels. Two leaders with Taco Bell roots Mike Grams and Meredith Sandland to Join Leadership Team at Starbucks Executive Vice President, North America Chief Stores Officer This first new role will be held by former president and global chief operating officer Mike Grams. Grams is one of a few people Niccol has brought on board from his previous roles at Taco Bell and Chipotle. Grams has 30 years of experience at Taco Bell, where he held multiple executive leadership positions over the years. Grams will be responsible for North America retail teams and store performance, and will also lead the customer solutions team. Executive Vice President, Chief Store Development Officer This newly created role will be filled by Meredith Sandland, founder and CEO of SaaS company, Empower Delivery. Sandland also is the author of “Delivering the Digital Restaurant” and a former COO of Kitchen United. She also worked with Niccol at Taco Bell, where she was chief development officer. Face the store. For some reason, nothing strikes fear in the hearts of our youthful employees like this task. Why? I don't know. It creates order and fosters a sense of completion that filling random spots around the store doesn't. I tell them the last step to facing is to walk back through and admire your work. How can that long stretch of shelves in pristine condition not lift your spirits a little? Who knew a can of beans could mean so much? There are so many 'Middle of the Road - Average Food - Less than Average Service - Somewhat Clean - "Why ARE WE HERE?" Restaurants'! They have no compelling competitive advantages and provide no reason for a potential customer to go past substitutes / competitors and buy from them. The list is vast - Tgif Fridays, Applebee's Neighborhood Grill + Bar, Chili's, Denny's, and a host of names that have faded into the past. It is rarely a bad experience - it is just not a compelling one. These operations have substantial networks in place. Long past time for the well-paid leadership teams at these operations to do their job and craft a real strategy for attracting profitable business.
