Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are being built around the world and as Dave Borlace points out in his latest video VPPs are adding Gigawatts of capacity to global electricity grids. As our illustrious provincial Premier likes to point out, Alberta is a natural gas province. This means our government needs to prop up centralized utilities by subsidizing their older and most inefficient gas plants because they would otherwise be uneconomical to keep running. It means firing the CEO of the electrical system operator who was enabling rapid growth in renewable generation and opposed the government's views on the unreliability of a grid with more wind and solar capacity. It also means our government needs to throw a bomb into Alberta's rapidly growing renewable energy industry by announcing a 6 month ban on new renewable energy projects and then introducing policy designed to create uncertainty in the market. The expected result of drying up investment in Alberta's renewable energy sector was almost immediate. Take that rapidly growing competitor! Didn't you know Alberta is a gas province? (We also have a lot of cows and conservative old farts, so yes, methane rules in this province.) It came as a surprise to learn that Alberta has some tiny green shoots of investment in VPPs. SunAlta Power is developing the province's first VPP with 8 to 10 sites across the province. Emissions Reduction Alberta is also investing a few million dollars in some VPP demonstration projects. (Wait! Why hasn't this program been defunded? Someone get Danielle Smith on the line.) Solartility is currently recruiting Alberta homeowners with solar panels to join their VPP. They also claim to be developing Alberta's first VPP. President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda Will Fund Three Projects to Scale Enhanced Geothermal Systems, Which Have Potential to Deliver Renewable Geothermal Energy to Power the Equivalent of 65 Million U.S. Homes WASHINGTON, D.C.—In support of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), today announced the selection of three projects that will receive up to $60 million to demonstrate the efficacy and scalability of enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). Funded by the landmark Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the pilot projects will use innovative technology and a variety of development techniques to capture the earth’s abundant heat resources. There's long been a debate about whether public lands should be opened for #energy development. Typically, the debate has centered around #fossilfuel development like oil and gas leases. But the Western Solar Plan, created by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in 2012, has finally been updated and has identified 22 million acres in 11 states that could support large-scale????#solar development. The beauty of the plan is that unlike mining and drilling, solar farms can preserve the natural habitats for western wildlife while producing enough energy to power 3.5 million????homes. I just learned of the Puerto Rico Energy Resilience Fund, which supports the island's grid resilience efforts, and strives to achieve the ambitious goal of 100% renewable energy to meet the island's needs by 2050! Recent hurricanes like Fiona have severely impacted Puerto Rico's grid, leaving some residents without electricity for months. Therefore, initiatives like this will help the people of Puerto Rico while also helping the planet through cleaner and greener power sources. Not in My Back Yard! One of the Governments first significant tests of their anti-NIMBY Policy as they head toward a probable clash with locals in the South Pennine Moors over plans for the largest Onshore Windfarm. Green Energy, New Jobs and ￡75m for locals over 30 years toward Energy Bills needs to be weighed carefully against transforming an area of local beauty into an "industrial landscape". This will likely be a key project to watch given its location and significance, likely paving the way or putting the brakes on the 436 projects planned to deliver 3,120 turbines (serving ~2.5m HHs) on land in the UK in the coming years.
