On November 2, 2024, a powerful video emerged on Iranian social media showing a female student partially undressed on a university campus in a bold protest against the strict dress code. Her actions followed a distressing encounter with university security, who physically harassed her for wearing her hijab incorrectly. Reports from the Amir Kabir newsletter and student channels indicate that security forces forcibly removed her headscarf and tore her clothing, prompting her to strip as a form of protest. The video captures her, in her underwear, quietly sitting and walking on campus before she was violently arrested and taken to an unknown location. In response, the university's public relations director, Seyed Amir Mahjoub, claimed that security merely handed her over to the police and denied any physical altercation. He further suggested that the student was experiencing a psychological disorder and was in severe distress. State-run media echoed these claims, framing her actions as a result of mental health issues and reporting that she was being transferred to a mental hospital. Labeling women as having mental health issues is part of a disturbing pattern used by Iranian authorities to discredit those protesting the compulsory hijab law. For instance, Roya Zakeri, known as the "Girl of Tabriz," was arrested in October 2023 and labeled mentally unstable after a viral video of her arrest. Vida Movahed, who sparked the "Girls of Revolution Street" movement by symbolically removing her hijab in December 2017, faced similar allegations. Two years after the tragic death of Mahsa Amini in police custody and the widespread protests that followed, Iranian women continue to face harassment and assault for perceived violations of the hijab law. Femena strongly condemns this ongoing oppression and urges Iranian authorities to respect women's rights over their bodies. #WomanLifeFreedom #????_????_???????

Australian MP Julian Leeser proposed a judicial inquiry into antisemitism on Campus. But a judicial inquiry into antisemitism on Campus will only do so much. We don’t need descriptions of what has happened. We have all seen footage. We all know there has been violence and hatred. We know university students and students have been harassed, spat on, assaulted. We know who is behind it - a terrorist organisation banned from Australia and many other countries. We know that lots of these kids are simply ignorant of their actions- they think they are clever interrupting classes and creating an atmosphere of fear. They think they are winning something, but they are simply destroying the Australia I love. So how will a Judicial Inquiry help? We need action not words. We need the immediate and complete use of the existing law. Hate speech is a criminal offence in this country. I was involved in crafting the law. It is weak law wrapped in cotton wool. Of course we are afraid of the consequences of convicting someone. Essentially those who call for the genocide of the Jewish people- in Israel and Australia - are engaging in hate speech. Protestors who are violent and make the streets unsafe for others, should be convicted and banned from the streets. Mark Scott and others who protect haters, are doubly accountable. As far as I know the only 18C case brought recently was of an Imam who spewed hatred from a pulpit. It seems that was not hate enough. If we need a judicial inquiry it is into why no one is using the law to protect Jews. Why are police standing around or sending Jews on there way? Why do they need an investigation as to ‘gas the Jews’ or ‘where are the Jews’? They are both direct acts of hatred and nothing to do with Australia. If there is to be a judicial inquiry, it should be into the failure of law and the state to keep us safe. Never before has Australia seen such violence and vitriol on the streets and university campuses. A judicial inquiry will not me or my kids safe when we go to the state library or anyone safe on a university campus.

1/3: I had the great honor to talk to a young student from Tehran, who participated in the Iranian protests of 2022. It was a very insightful conversation, which provided me with a broader understanding of the importance of democratic values, liberties and the active engagement for upholding human rights. Dynamics of violent and dehumanizing rhetoric in far-right social media Mattias Wahlstr?m Anton?T?rnberg Hans?Ekbrand Abstract This article sheds light on mechanisms by which online social interactions contribute to instigating far-right political violence. It presents an analysis of how violence against ethnic and religious minorities is motivated and legitimized in social media, as well as the situational conditions for such violent rhetoric. Online violent rhetoric in a Swedish public far-right social media discussion group was studied using a combination of machine-learning tools and qualitative analysis. The analysis shows that violent rhetoric primarily occurs in the context of narratives about criminals and crimes with (imagined) immigrant perpetrators and often particularly vulnerable victims, linked to a social problem definition of a corrupt and failing state as well as the alleged need to deport immigrants. The use of dehumanizing and infrahumanizing expressions both legitimizes political violence and spurs negative emotions that may increase motivation for violent action. https://lnkd.in/etgvPC6V

Free Speech in the United Kingdom Sir Keir Starmer strong-arming the authorities to prosecute people for imprudent social media posts will have a chilling effect on free speech. At the Free Speech Union (FSU), we're fighting back. When Cheshire police arrested a 55 year-old women last week for wrongly identifying the Southport attacker as a Muslim asylum seeker, we stepped in to provide assistance. We would be amazed if she is charged — but if she is, we will pay for her defence. While she may be guilty of spreading misinformation, that isn't (yet) a crime, and it would be hard to charge her with the section 179 false communications offence created by the Online Safety Act, because one of its tests is that "the message conveys information the person knows to be false" — clearly, this isn't the case here. Many other people have been getting in touch to seek advice following recent pronouncements that even the act of sharing footage of rioting on social media could be enough to land you with a criminal record. That's why we've put in place an arrangement with a top firm of criminal lawyers, so if one of our members is contacted by the police in connection with something they've said — in real-life or online — about the murder of the three schoolgirls in Southport and the subsequent unrest, we will pay for a telephone consultation about your case and may, at our discretion, pay for a solicitor to attend a police interview, as well as further legal work on your case. If you're an FSU supporter, now might be a good time to become a member. Click the link below to join us and help support the work we do, standing up for the speech rights of our 15,500+ members in an increasingly censorious culture. https://lnkd.in/d6Y7wMBq The enemies of free speech fight in packs. It's defenders need to band together too. Join the FSU. Together we can cancel cancel culture. #freespeach #freedom #socialmedia #humanrights #democracy

AN OPEN LETTER TO CRITICS OF ISRAEL AND THE JEWS If you recognise yourself in the heading of this letter, it's time that we had an honest conversation. You know who you are: students, academics, lawyers, politicians, journalists, 'celebrities' and others who have become increasingly vocal in your strident opposition to Israel since the events of October 7. You differ in your backgrounds but you're united in the anger that you feel - an anger that just seems to build with each passing day. So, let's start by being honest about the root of that anger. ??It isn't really because you believe that Israel is guilty of 'genocide'. The International Court of Justice rejected that claim - but you're still angry. ??Nor is it because you really believe that the death toll in Gaza is too high. You and I both know that the casualty numbers from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry are heavily inflated and that the real fatality rate in Gaza is tiny by comparison to other recent conflicts in the region - but you don't care. You're still angry. ??It isn't because you honestly think that the attack of 7 October was 'resistance'. You've seen some of the footage of rape, infanticide and murder by Hamas and (although you hate to admit it) it offends your conscience and shakes your resolve - but it doesn't diminish your anger at Israel and the Jews. ??It isn't even because you really believe that Hamas are the 'good guys' in this conflict. You know that they're not - but you're still angry at Israel and the Jews. ??And while we're being honest, let's acknowledge that your anger toward Israel and the Jews isn't really about the Palestinians, or territory, or human rights. In fact, it isn't really even about Israel. Your anger is about the Jews. And it isn't anger. It's hate. And therein lies the reality of what's playing out around the world. You - and millions of others - hate Jews, and the events of October 7 were little more than an excuse to publicly display that hatred. Some are doing so for the first time; others are simply dusting off an old demon. And that's the thing - none of this is new. Jew hatred (let's dispense with polite terms like 'antisemitism') has been with us for at least two thousand years and - like the self-bargaining of a drug addict - it continues to find new ways to justify itself to those who are infected by it. The question is, are you still self-aware enough to recognise that you're under the influence of something evil? Are you capable of understanding that Jew-hatred is (let's be blunt) demonic and exists in a realm beyond rationality and reason? If you are, message me, and I'll help you. If you're not - may God have mercy on you, because there will be consequences for your actions, either in this life, or the next one. Genesis 12:3...

Law prevails. Attempts to silence dissent and opposition fail. How can there be a peaceful future for Israel? End the madness. Negotiate the Palestinian state into existence. Provide hope, security and a peaceful life for both Israelis and Palestinians. Failure to do so will mean this current slaughter and madness is but the most recent and that more will come. There can be no peace without negotiation. Two-state solution - now! Recognise Palestinian state - now! End the madness - now!

Free speech is the foundation of our democracy. Do you really want to sacrifice our democracy so that Israel can continue its genocide, ethnic cleansing, & brutal, racist apartheid, WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS? >14K KIDS + >10K WOMEN = >65% of the dead = U.S. Funded GENOCIDE Please listen to world renowned Columbia University professor & public policy expert Jeffrey Sachs (who is Jewish) explain why the campus crackdowns on anti-genocide, anti-apartheid, “pro-Palestine” protesters violates the 1st amendment & sets a very dangerous precedent for the future of our democracy: https://lnkd.in/gwHzx6SS PLEASE WRITE & CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES to demand they stop helping Israel kill children, ethnically cleanse families & maintain its brutal racist apartheid WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS. OVER 65% of the people that Israel has been killing have been WOMEN (>10K) & CHILDREN (>14K), & they have been starving everyone, including babies, disabled kids, elderly, & pregnant women, so this is definitely both genocide & ethnic cleansing.

Freedom of speech, as guaranteed by the US Constitution, may face restrictions concerning criticism of the state of Israel or its government.? The issue has intensified with assertions that criticizing Israel and its leaders is not permissible. If the proposed legislation passes, it could impact international law enforcement: " The US House of Representatives has voted to pass an antisemitism awareness bill, a controversial measure sponsored by a New York Republican amid controversy over pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses?in Manhattan?and across the US, as Israel’s war with Hamas drags on. The bill passed 320-91 with some bipartisan support. [...] The American Civil Liberties Union opposed the bill,?telling members: “Federal law already prohibits antisemitic discrimination and harassment by federally funded entities. “[The bill] is therefore not needed to protect against antisemitic discrimination; instead, it would likely chill free speech of students on college campuses by incorrectly equating criticism of the Israeli government with antisemitism." [...] “In recent years there has been an energetic effort to redefine the term to mean something else. This new definition – known today as the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s ‘working definition of antisemitism’, is explicitly politicised, refocusing the term to encompass not only hatred of Jews, but also hostility toward and criticism of the modern state of Israel.” " #USA #House #antisemitismawarenessbill #equatingcriticismoftheIsraeligovernmentwithantisemitism

As an Iranian woman, I am heartbroken and outraged by the recent events at Tehran’s University, where Ahoo Daryayi was reportedly detained after bravely protesting mandatory hijab laws by disrobing in defiance. To witness yet another woman in Iran subjected to humiliation and violence for asserting her basic rights is painful beyond words. Her courageous act, met with repression, highlights the unyielding strength of Iranian women who continue to fight for Women, Life, Freedom. These women risk everything to speak out against laws that control their bodies and choices. Their resilience is inspiring, but it also underscores the urgent need for change and for the world to stand in solidarity with them. No woman, anywhere, should face such treatment for her choices or beliefs. I urge everyone who sees this to amplify these voices, to advocate for the rights of Iranian women, and to raise awareness of the injustices they face. Together, let’s echo their courage and demand a world where every woman is free. #WomenLifeFreedom #StandWithIranianWomen #FreedomForIran
