Our primary aim is to ensure these sites are environmentally safe and compliant with all regulatory standards. Given the importance of maintaining closed landfills, the role requires a meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of environmental protocols. Travel forms a significant part of this job—up to 75% of my time is spent on the road, visiting different sites across various states. While this might sound daunting, it offers a unique opportunity to see diverse landscapes and work with a variety of local teams. The key is to stay flexible and organized, ensuring that every site receives the thorough care and inspection it deserves. Being on the move so often means each day is different. We are actively seeking subcontractor bids for an upcoming environmental remediation contract to assist with the recovery efforts for the LA Fires, in partnership with FEMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Los Angeles District. ?? Eligibility: Small businesses, including Tribal-Owned, NHO-Owned, SDVOSB, HUBZone, WOSB, SDB, and SBA 8(a) participants, are encouraged to submit. Interested firms must meet the following qualifications: Key Questions to Address: Firm Information: Provide your firm’s name, address, point of contact, phone number, and email address. Inventory: Provide an inventory of equipment relevant to debris removal work. State-Approved Laboratories: What state-approved laboratories would your firm consider using for this work? Personnel Availability: How many employees would be available to perform Hazardous Site Assessment 2 weeks after award? 4 weeks after award? Documentation Submittals: Can your firm submit an Accident Prevention Plan (APP), Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA), HSA Workplan, Contractor Quality Control (CQC) Plan, and other required submittals within 72 hours after contract award? This article brings to mind a few questions. Did the EPA or the VADEQ follow up on the inspection results? Is so, they were all fixed satisfactorily, correct? If not, was the entity fined? If not, why? It’s one thing to call it out, but if our governing bodies refuse to ensure the laws and regulations are followed, then no one will take them seriously. Obviously a facility this size has a regular PM schedule. Were those PMs being falsified? This issue goes much deeper than a power failure. This is another great example of why we hire Environmental Specialists and Safety Specialists to our teams, and why we listen to them. Also, a good manager or engineer would never let there plant look like this.

Identification of Hazards: Environmental hazards: Chemical spills, oil leaks, fires, floods, earthquakes, etc. Potential impacts: Damage to ecosystems, water contamination, air pollution, and risks to human health. 02. Emergency Response Team: Composition: Trained personnel from various departments (e.g., safety, environmental, maintenance). Roles and responsibilities: Incident command, containment, cleanup, communication, etc. 03. Emergency Procedures: Immediate actions: Containment, evacuation, notification, and first aid. Emergency response equipment: Fire extinguishers, spill kits, protective gear. Communication protocols: Internal and external communication channels. 04. Incident Command System (ICS): Structure: A standardized organizational framework for managing emergencies. Roles: Incident commander, operations section chief, planning section chief, logistics section chief, finance/administration section chief. 05. Environmental Assessments: Pre- and post-incident assessments: To evaluate the extent of environmental damage. Sampling and testing: To determine the nature and concentration of contaminants. 06. Cleanup and Remediation: Contractors and specialists: Engagement of qualified professionals for cleanup operations. Cleanup methods: Appropriate techniques based on the nature of the spill or incident. Regulatory compliance: Adherence to environmental regulations and permits. 07. Public Relations and Communication: Public notification: Timely and accurate information dissemination. Media Relations: Management of media inquiries and public concerns. 08. Training and Drills: Regular training: To ensure that personnel are prepared to respond effectively. Emergency drills: Simulated exercises to test the EERP and identify areas for improvement. 09. Review and Updates: Periodic review: To ensure the EERP remains relevant and effective. Updates: Incorporate changes in regulations, technology, or organizational structure. The “we just want someone to manage approvals” statement from my last post is often paired with “we’re sick of paying for consultants”. Or in one case "I f***ing hate consultants." I have some bad news. If you’re a small mining or oil and gas company, and hire a team-of-one environmental manager, you’ll still need consultants. It probably won’t even reduce your consultant spend, at least not significantly. Almost all approval applications, bar the most simple administrative amendments, require a level of assessment of environmental values and impacts - ecology, groundwater, surface water and flooding, noise, air quality, etc. No single in-house environmental manager can do all this work - either technically or logistically. Despite what you hope, you’re not hiring an environment manager to do this work. You’re hiring an environmental manager to: - Increase efficiencies by taking the approvals project management workload off other company leaders, so they can focus on their core responsibilities - Bring the technical background and expertise to be able to speak the environmental assessment and approvals language with consultants, lawyers, regulators and other stakeholders - Scope environmental assessment studies, manage consultants and review technical reports - On top of this, provide all the other value that I mentioned in my last post This is where you might save some of the money that you’ve been spending on consultants. Having an experienced environmental professional to scope environmental assessment projects, more closely manage your consultants, and look after the relationship with your regulators and stakeholders might curb some of the spend if you’ve previously relied on a consultant to manage this aspect of your approvals work. But a single in-house enviro manager will never remove the need to use consultants.
