I love this! Especially the “surprise your team with healthy treats.” It’s so easy to get donuts or cookies or cakes, but what are we saying? If we are going to make an investment in the health of our teams, then let’s start by giving them the type of sustainable energy they need to be high performers. What I would add to this for leaders and managers, how are you rewarding the people who are enabling kindness in your workspace? How does kindness translate into your annual objectives? How would you observe kindness in others and articulate these behaviors in performance evaluations? How is kindness supported, encouraged, and reinforced? It's not enough for an individual to be kind in the workplace. Their kindness can only create a small bubble. The organization has to translate what kindness means in its performance management program so that individuals are encouraged and incentivized to be kind. And then kindness feeds onto itself.

Feels a lot like the principles we learn and teach our kids in kindergarten. Where as adults did we forget how to see each other? At dinner last night we discussed and debated the need and the demise of office culture- Culture is not axe throwing- though sign me up for that! ?? Culture to me is being human. Showing your humanness. Knowing you work with other humans. Understanding you are connected, rely on each other, have shared accountability and interdependency. No one needs to be BFFs. We all have lives outside of work, priorities and responsibilities. I believe how we show up for each other or don’t show up, contributes to how we see ourselves and our value.

There are no negative outcomes to showing kindness. As someone with leadership and management aspirations, I use every day as a chance to hone my skills in empathy and kindness. It might sound funny to consider kindness a skill, but it absolutely can be. When our days are busy, when the air hangs with the weight of stress, when a client isn’t complying (and may choose to show it with anger) it takes a trained mind to take a step back and consider how we can remove the idea of something or someone being the “enemy”, or as a situation as something to win rather than an opportunity to see eye to eye. Be kind, it is such a simple idea that holds so much. Through kindness we can elevate our teams, further ensure our clients, and open our communication skills.
