The level of food insecurity in New York City has increased significantly since the beginning of the pandemic. According to an analysis by Feeding America, the number of New York City residents struggling with food insecurity has risen by 36% overall and by 46% among children. We are grateful to our grantee partner City Harvest for responding to the crisis. They have rescued more than 1 billion pounds of nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste—working with restaurants, wholesalers, grocery stores, farms, and other partners— to distribute that food to individuals and families in need. HUNGER CAN'T WAIT — The Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina - an Action Pathways Inc. program - has introduced a farmer's market at its Food Distribution Center in Fayetteville, where those facing hunger can choose fresh produce and meats, and it has been a game-changer. On average, 200 families have taken advantage of the market each time it is open, a testament to the program's success and the community's support. SHFB is committed to expanding these markets to communities in its 7-county service area where the need is urgent. In this service area, 16.7%, or over 130,000 individuals, are food insecure. October 16 marks World Food Day recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and this year's theme "Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future" reflects on the ongoing efforts to ensure everyone has access to nourishment. In Northumberland County, many families, seniors, and children face the harsh reality of not knowing where their next meal will come from. As winter nears, some are forced to choose between heating their homes and buying groceries, while others grapple with the shame of relying on local food banks to feed their families. We believe that tackling hunger starts close to home, and your support can help fund food security programs like Northumberland Eats 2.0, which provides microgrants to grassroots agencies operating as food banks and hubs. These efforts directly combat food insecurity by reinforcing the safety nets that so many in our community depend on daily. We don’t have a food shortage, we have a distribution shortage. Rather than passing our surplus food around the table, we're throwing it in the trash. New York City is far from immune to this crisis. Approximately 1.2 million New Yorkers, including one in five children, experience food insecurity (City Harvest). The economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated the situation, leading to unprecedented demand for food assistance. At Xavier Mission, we are committed to combating hunger and providing support to those in need. Our programs are designed to address immediate food needs while also tackling the underlying causes of food insecurity. Through our Welcome Table, Food Pantry, Clothing Room, Financial Assistance Program and Life Skills Empowerment Program, we provide nutritious meals, groceries, and essential resources and stability to thousands of individuals and families each year. Our work goes beyond food distribution. We advocate for policy changes to improve food access and affordability, and we offer programs that help individuals achieve financial stability and self-sufficiency. Post-grad news: I'm happy to share that I'll be starting as Mid-Ohio Food Collective's Communications Coordinator next week! I'm eager to support MOFC's mission of combatting hunger in Franklin County and beyond through their food banks, farm, 'farmacy,' kitchen and markets. The USDA's Economic Research Service reported that food insecurity in the U.S. rose from 12.8% (17 million) in 2022 to 13.5% (18 million) in 2023. Comparatively, in 2020 and 2021, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity was recorded at 10.5% (13.8 million) and 10.2% (13.5 million) respectively. The topic of food insecurity in America is more prevalent than ever, so I encourage you to volunteer with MOFC or your local food bank, especially during this holiday season.
