With GCSE results day facing students around the UK today, many will be planning their next steps whether that’s College, an apprenticeship or going straight into work. But for many young people from less privileged backgrounds this may not be a straightforward decision. There are more factors at play that can impact a young person’s next steps, it’s not as simple as the results achieved. It’s crucial for employers to recognise there are more ways to identify top talent other than grades and that there is immense value to be gained from building a workforce made up of diverse backgrounds and lived experiences. That's why we're incredibly proud at BIE to have partnered with both The Aldridge Foundation and Drive Forward Foundation which are dedicated to improving access to opportunities for young people pre and post-GCSE results day. Both organisations have a range of programmes that aim to upskill young people with crucial skills needed to enter the workplace and break down systemic barriers that can prevent young people from achieving their goals. Their work contributes to a more even playing field for young people as well as improving social mobility overall. Mott Community College’s Dr. Marcus Matthews, Assistant Vice President of Workforce and Economic Development, and Dr. Rebecca Myszenski, Assistant Vice President of Career and Technical Education, recently provided insights for an article published by the American Institute of Research (AIR), titled?"Building Strong Partnerships with Employers for Community Colleges." The article highlights effective strategies for community colleges to engage with employers and develop sustainable workforce programs, and showcases MCC as a leader in this arena. The College’s innovative approaches, such as the?Workforce Promise Initiative,?work-based learning programs, joint training programs with industry, and its nationally recognized apprenticeship programs, were key aspects of the interviews. Matthews emphasized MCC's forward-thinking approach, stating, "Employer partnerships are the backbone of our workforce development strategy. A Message to GCSE Students and Businesses small and large. As students across the country gear up for their GCSE exams, I am reminded of my own journey, which began without many academic achievements but led me to a transformative career in the Army. This path, while unique and not for everyone, was my stepping stone into adulthood and learning key life skills. In light of the current exam season, I want to extend a message of encouragement not only to the students but also to the businesses that play a crucial role in shaping our future workforce. Apprenticeships, job experience programs, and insight days are more than just opportunities, they are a testament to a company's commitment to the next generation. To the companies who invest in young people thank you. Your efforts in nurturing talent not only secure your own future but also show our young adults that there are multiple paths to success. These initiatives are invaluable in helping them find their place in the world. To the students: remember, exams are just one part of your journey. Whether you excel or face challenges, there are countless opportunities ahead. Through the choices you make you can explore various paths and thrive. The world is full of possibilities, and every experience is a chance to grow.

How do we, as a nation, establish a skilled pipeline of workers? We need a national vision and commitment, similar to what we have achieved with K-12 schools. Apprenticeship for Construction is essentially the university system for our nation's construction workforce. This must become a shared responsibility that profoundly shapes our communities and enriches lives. One of the primary ways this is happening is through workforce development programs, which are at the heart of this mission. These programs nurture talent and provide individuals with meaningful opportunities to thrive. In my experience, I’ve witnessed how strong leadership and robust partnerships serve as the cornerstones of these programs, creating foundations for long-term success.
