I'm happy that an engineering-related design has taken out the highest award at the Good Design Australia Awards ceremony in Sydney on Friday (again!). Well done to the da Vinci 5 Surgical System in the medical + scientific design category. As an Ambassador for Good Design Australia, judge for the engineering design category for several years and the inaugural chair of the policy design category this year (congratulations The Tomorrow Party for winning Best in Class in this category!), I hope you will consider nominations for next year’s awards in the engineering, policy, and all the other categories. The Good Design Australia Awards aim to celebrate great examples of good design and to raise awareness of what good design means and entails.... such an important objective given good design is needed across so many aspects of our economy and society as we grapple with some urgent and important challenges. While there is no single and agreed definition of ‘design’, this is how I define it: “Design is…. the intentional choice of elements (or parts) and their characteristics, and how they interact in order to achieve a desired effect, outcome or function.” I like this definition because it applies to all sorts of design - engineering, industrial, communications, fashion, policy (and anything else). It is subtly different to ‘design thinking’ which is a popular approach to ‘doing’ design that involves creativity, collaborative engagement with stakeholders throughout the design and development process, and deep consideration of the end-user’s point of view. Suffolk-based cleanroom design & build experts launch their fifth new subsite in the space of a year ? THE GUARDTECH GROUP have taken their total cleanroom package offering to even greater heights with the launch of their new Isopod Rapid Cleanrooms website, writes Lily Gittings.
