#WorldCancerDay #prevention #earlydetection #equity #healthcare A wish: talk to one person today about cancer and its early detection (exams, tests) and prevention (HPV vaccine, no smoking, no/few alcohol, sports, and nutrition). Thank you! Family members and friends died too early because of cancer; gladly some have survived but live with lifelong consequences. Our loved ones need our support to make healthy decisions to prevent and detect early. I did the research for my doctoral degree in #anthropology about breast cancer and the health politics of early detection in Austria and Brazil in the 2000s. Numbers in Austria are increasing, but people are not undergoing the FREE yearly detection exams and tests in an amount that we would see any decrease, any better survival. Certain lifestyle decisions but also working and living conditions influence cancer diagnosis - let′s stand together and improve our health literacy and help others to access healthcare. Equity in health is also a topic here, access and understanding of diagnosis is crucial for early detection and treatment. Medical anthropology has done a lot of research on patient′s journeys worldwide. I put some readings in the comments. https://lnkd.in/dHqHqmRQ https://lnkd.in/dZ4yUYGh https://lnkd.in/dWNeXB8p (Austria) https://tjcc.com.br/ (Brazil) https://lnkd.in/d7VZEeEp (Deutschland) Schon fast historisch: https://lnkd.in/gzXEdpH3 SOLAR PLEXUS - Gestalter*innen der Gesundheitszukunft

Does maternal obesity have an impact on the health of the offspring? Using animal models, a team from the UNIGE and the HUG have shown how obesity alters the mother's microbiota. This altered microbiota is passed on to her offspring, who then see their risk of cancer or liver disease rise to 80%, compared with 20% in individuals born to healthy mothers. These results, obtained in mice ??, need to be confirmed in humans. They are a warning signal and a call for action to limit the deleterious effect of obesity on children. This work was directed by Christian Toso, professor at the Faculté de médecine - UNIGE and senior physician at the HUG - H?pitaux Universitaires de Genève, and Beat Moeckli, post-doctoral student at the Faculté de médecine - UNIGE and head of clinic at the HUG - H?pitaux Universitaires de Genève. ?? "It is time to expand the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) agenda to ensure that no thyroid patient is left behind", says Prof. Dr. Leonidas Duntas, Endocrinologist, Evgenidion Hospital, University of Athens. In 2018, the NCDs agenda expanded to a 5x5 approach with 5 major NCDs (cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and neurological disorders). Now, it should be expanded once again: recognizing thyroid diseases as important NCDs would ensure: ?? inclusion of thyroid conditions in policy agendas ?? increased awareness to prevent thyroid disorders and complications ??more equitable access to screening ??timely diagnosis and care ??data collection, research, and funding. *https://ncdalliance.org #ITAW #ITAW2024 #thyroid #hypothyroid #hyperthyroid #screening #gravesdisease #TED #hashimotosdisease #thyroidcancer #endocrinology

May is #BrainTumorAwarenessMonth, a time dedicated to supporting, educating, and amplifying the voices of the brain tumor community. At Rhythm, we are advancing research in #hypothalamic obesity – a rare, acquired form of severe #obesity that occurs following structural damage to the hypothalamic region of the brain, most commonly due to a brain tumor or its treatment. This area contains the MC4R pathway, which is responsible for controlling hunger and weight regulation. Learn more about our focus on rare MC4R pathway diseases: https://lnkd.in/eT5yBhvf
