Happy World Metrology Day! ???? Today commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875, which established the foundations for international collaboration in the science of measurement, maintaining uniformity and traceability in measurements worldwide. Metrology is an essential component in Total Quality Management. It forms the basis for measurement, calibration and process control that are integrated with quality improvement strategies such as Lean and Six Sigma. In Lean, metrology supports waste reduction in terms of defects, variation and determining process capability (Cp,Cpk). In the Six Sigma DMAIC method, the "M", which stands for Measure, could not be achieved without metrology. Aside from the value, the coolest thing about modern metrology are the cutting edge tools. In dimensional measurement, 3D Metrology utilizes 3D scanners that are ISO 17025 certified. The 3D scanner generates a point cloud which can be used to detect variations in complex free-from structures, improving on the previous coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) in terms of speed and flexibility. Zeiss, Artec 3D and Creaform are some leading 3D Metrology companies.
