??Momentum for African agrifood systems transformation?- from Kampala to Berlin! ???? H.E. Josefa Sacko, Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment, delivered a very powerful address today at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA). Leveraging on the momentum of the recent Extraordinary Summit of the African Union, held in Kampala earlier this month, she highlighted the crucial role of the newly launched Strategy and Action Plan 2026-2035 for achieving prosperity, food and nutrition security within the framework of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP). The urgency is clear, and the ambition for transformative change is high. But as also underscored by the Commissioner, strong international collaboration will be critical. This market is part of the?Mediterranean and African Markets Initiative (#MAMi), funded by Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and implemented by CIHEAM Bari. After Alexandria, Egypt, Nairobi proudly becomes the second city in this initiative, with more countries like Tunisia, Lebanon, and Albania set to join soon. We want to build a sustainable and direct agricultural supply chain that strengthens local communities while fostering international cooperation. With the support of partners like the Italian Embassy in Kenya and Coldiretti’s Fondazione Campagna Amica, this project bridges cultures and creates opportunities for growth. The Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network - FANRPAN Annual Policy Dialogue is currently underway in Lilongwe, Malawi, from August 6-9, 2024. The African Union (AU) has adopted a new agricultural development strategy that will see the continent increase its agri-foods output by 45 percent by 2035 and transform its agri-food systems as part of its new plan to become food secure in a decade. This is after the African Union Extraordinary Summit on the Post-Malabo Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) held in Kampala, Uganda, adopted the 10-year CAADP Strategy and Action Plan and the Kampala CAADP Declaration on Building Resilient and Sustainable Agri-food Systems in Africa, which will be implemented from 2026 to 2035. The Jigawa State Government and the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) have signed a $100,000 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to improve agriculture and its value chain over the next year. This was disclosed by the Deputy Country Director of the Sasakawa Africa Association, Dr Abdulhamid Gambo, while addressing journalists shortly after meeting with the Jigawa State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Muttaqa Namadi. Dr Gambo stated that the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) has been operating in Jigawa State for over 30 years, providing various supports and interventions in agriculture, food production, and value chain development aimed at improving the livelihoods of rural women and youth, as well as enhancing food security. In its drive to promote a Food-Secure Future, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to harness innovations and technologies. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, made the pledge at the 33rd session of FAO’s regional conference for Africa (ARC 33) in Rabat, capital of Morocco. ?According to him, the theme of the conference: “Resilient Agrifood Systems and Inclusive Rural Transformation,” resonated deeply with the challenges Nigeria faces regarding food security, explaining that the conference provides a vital platform for fostering collaboration and partnerships at national and regional levels, crucial for addressing these challenges.
