Earlier this year, I was privileged enough to attend the 8th Annual Rhodes University Community Engagement Conference with my fellow Societal Impact Task Team members. In the blog below, I try my best to convey all that we discussed about the seemingly simple yet complex topic of community and community engagement. In my opinion, four days was not nearly enough time to delve deeply into engaged research and building stronger community relationships, but it was a really good start. I hope some of what I learned (and questioned) resonates with fellow aspiring researchers, in whatever field you may be. My biggest takeaway: Research is not only about sample collection, data analysis, and publishing results. Research is also about people and community, and it is our duty to ensure that the work we do serves the greater good and not just ourselves. Do you know how rare it is to have an attendee of one of your events actually take action? Believe me - it is pretty rare! Thank goodness Jennifer Martire Baukol is in the 1%. I was thinking this morning that I need to give Bob a shout and ask for a deep discount on a bulk supply of his books because they are absolutely a gift I want to give to anyone that would actually read it!!! Truly important reading with story telling that is well crafted and built for ease! A little about this book and why I so strongly recommend that you buy the hard copy and/or listen to it on Audible. "The Go-Giver," co-authored by Bob Burg and John David Mann, is a business book that espouses a philosophy based on giving. The book outlines five laws of stratospheric success, which are as follows: 1) The Law of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment. This law suggests that the key to successful business is to focus first on providing immense value to others. 2) The Law of Compensation: Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them. This means the more people you help and the more value you provide to them, the more financially successful you will be. 3) The Law of Influence: Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first. It proposes that the best way to build influence and achieve success is to constantly and consistently provide value to others and to put their interests ahead of your own. 4) The Law of Authenticity: The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself. This law emphasizes the importance of being genuine and authentic, suggesting that real success comes not from the skills you have but from being real and authentic with others. 5) The Law of Receptivity: The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving. It suggests that giving and receiving are two sides of the same coin, and being open to receiving is as important as giving. It's about the flow of giving and receiving that creates abundance. These laws serve as a framework for building success, not just in business, but in life as well, by focusing on giving value, making a positive impact on others, and maintaining authentic relationships. A lot of books speak about giving however the Go Giver has been the first book that opened my eyes to how to be open to receiving. It's often hard to describe what I do - but here's one cool example! Back in Feb, I facilitated a fantastic workshop in Whakatāne with local stakeholders to tackle the challenge "how do we grow STEM capacity and capabilities in the region?". Using our outcomes mapping framework, I took all those local insights and combined them with STEM Alliance's extensive research into effective community engagement. The resulting STEMM Action Plan offers a practical roadmap for investing in collective action to strengthen STEM outreach and education across the region. It's only the beginning (plans are only good if they lead to action!) but I hope it will be a useful starting point as local funders, educators and community orgs work together to grow their impact in the STEM space.

Next week The Urban Dream Chasers (TUDC) hit the road.? We may be visiting a school near you! It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to talk about the benefits of having Emotional and Social Intelligence (EmoSo) at the heart of our education system. EmoSo benefits students of all ages. It's not a 2024 buzzword but a transformative approach to learning and personal growth. When used in the classroom (EmoSo) can create an environment where students feel safe to express themselves, collaborate effectively, and embrace diversity. In short, students equipped with high EmoSo intelligence are better equipped to handle stress, manage their emotions, and maintain positive relationships in all areas of life.
