I often hear people mention that when they’ve sorted their financial plans out, they want to look at alternative ways of investing to make a difference. One way of doing that is through angel investing. Angel investing is typically for high net worth individuals with annual income over ￡100k and net assets worth upwards of ￡250k. Angel investing is much higher risk than normal stock market investment. You’re investing in small or start up companies and may not have access to your capital for some time. Your investment could fail, completely or it could grow significantly. It’s more than the investment itself though - you could be supporting a business that fits with you ethically, you might be providing mentoring, support or a network to that business. Old fashioned Angel investing groups are often closed, clicky and don’t provide the knowledge, education and that safe space to ask those ‘silly’ questions. “When a founder does that, it makes me feel like they’re not trying.” -from a very active fund & angel investor I asked what founders do that deter them from getting a next meeting. The list could be a mile long, ? but the biggest thing that stands out to him is when a founder doesn’t work on building the relationship & tries to share their pitch deck right away. This can come from excitement or nerves, ?? but forgetting to build a relationship with a potential investor or not trying to get to know them can come across as lazy & ignorant. You don’t just have to take my word for it, I polled over 120 investors and this was in their top 5 “pet peeves” & “they won’t get a next meeting” bucket. Some might ask you to share a deck right away on a call, ?? but working on the relationship and preparing questions for them is ALL part of a recipe for success.
