In the ongoing struggle against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), prioritizing the needs of women and girls with disabilities is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. A vital aspect of this fight is holding perpetrators accountable through robust punishment, serving as a deterrent and empowering survivors to come forward. Government agencies and laws must actively champion the rights of survivors by enforcing strict consequences for GBV perpetrators. By implementing effective punitive measures, we not only demand accountability but also send a clear message that GBV is unacceptable in our society. This collaborative endeavor is indispensable in creating an environment where survivors, including those with disabilities, feel empowered to share their stories and seek justice. Olive Garden has settled a disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for $30,000 and agreed to several non-monetary remedies. The EEOC alleged that Olive Garden violated Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) in the workplace. Self-advocates play a key role in ending gender-based violence. Check out self-advocate, Mary Hettel on the importance of supporting survivors with disabilities. “When victimization occurs to [a person with developmental disabilities], if they know more about how to tell an authority figure or a peer advocate, they can choose supports that they need to heal, seek justice, and become survivors! These survivors tell their stories that inspire others to continue this work. As a supporter of anti-abuse of people with disabilities and Deaf people, I have witnessed survivors become leaders who have collaborated with lawmakers and partnered with agencies to write policies to reduce victimization and improve services." #DDAM2024

INCLUSIVE SAFEGUARDING There are many factors identified serving as barriers for some people not to access services. In most cases, people with disabilities face many challenges more than people without disabilities. These challenges range from stigma, discrimination, bullying etc. This leads them being deprived of accessing a service. Together we can remove those barriers and help make our programmes accessible and safe for all irrespective of someone disability status.
