Happy Friday all! Earlier this week I gave a talk on the two massive aviation dramas that happened in the first week of 2024 - the Japan Airlines A350 fire and the Alaska Airlines B737 MAX panel blowout. Together with colleagues in the UK, France and Germany, we pondered the numerous learning points from these events including topics such as compliance, design impact on safety, importance of briefing/training, organisational change and quality culture. A couple of questions have really stuck with me through the week and I'd be fascinated to have your take on these... 1) We inevitably make assumptions (based on experience) that people understand what it is they're working on, why and how they impact quality and safety. But how do we be sure to ask the right questions of ourselves and use the right systems and indicators to monitor this? 2) Even when risks are known, understood and managed (for example runway incursions ref the A350 collision), how is it possible that so many layers of the 'defence-in-depth' model can still be compromised? (e.g. training, air traffic control, robust communications, visual cues, situational awareness...) 3) How much reputational damage can an organisation withstand before the market loses faith in its ability to deliver? In the case of the Boeing / Airbus duopoly there appears to be incredible resilience - but there must be a limit! All hypothetical questions of course, but interesting talking points I hope you'll agree?

This article states a lot of what I have seen in the training environment. There needs to be a push to get rid of this 1500hr rule and replace it with a common sense training / career path to get to the airlines.

"What I didn't expect was Doug Stewart of the SOCIETY OF AVIATION AND FLIGHT EDUCATORS bone-chilling assessment of the state of flight training and the terrible prognosis for the professionalism of the industry. In a nutshell, the 1500-hour rule has resulted in a generation of ATPs who have only the vaguest idea how to fly any airplane, much less a 100,000-pound jet. "After decades as an instructor, he says he's never seen such unmotivated, unskilled and generally clueless students on their way to the airlines. There are some exceptions, for sure, but in general the vaunted ramp-up of flight training might as well be pumping air into the right seats of the nation and it has him terrified. He puts the blame squarely on the 1500-hour rule." I'd say this is a great argument for universal adoption of #CBTA #competencybasedtrainingandassessment as Boeing, FlightSafety International and CAE and many #airlines have done. I'd also say it's an argument for professionalizing #flightinstructing for which some have called. Then there's this: During the recent World Airline Training Conference the head of the National Association of Flight Instructors clarified it was always 1500 hours for an ATP but any changes would devastate the #training industry. https://lnkd.in/eMyTKswB
