Multi Part Post Alert - I have been in some form of sales for the past 22 years and its the end of the road for me. I have been very fortunate in my sales career with having won more than I have lost and had a solid home at Johnson Controls but I felt that it was time to call it quits. Life takes you down a lot of different roads for a lot of different reasons but I came to a crossroad and simply couldn't not take this turn. My wife and I decided to become franchisees and are now operating partners in three Jersey Mikes franchises. Total 180 from what I have done my entire life but I (we) are excited for what the future holds. To all those who have helped foster my sales career and helped to make me as successful as I am today, thank you. From the bottom of my heart thank you. This current turning point would not have been possible without my sales career and those who impacted it. ll leave those who are green to sales (and even some of you wiley veterans out there) and stumble across this post with some parting thoughts after two plus decades in sales. I can't tell you how many bullshit sales tactics classes, sales philosophies seminars, sales trainings etc that I have sat through. Most of them are pure and utter horse shit. Sales is as hard or as easy as you wanna make it. Choose to make it easy. See my recipe for easy below. In order for a deal to be good, fair and just there needs to be: 1. A win for the customer 2. A win for the rep 3. A win for the company All three won't always be there (and times may necessitate that only 1 or 2 of the three are) but if they are then you did good. Sales people are a law unto themselves ! Do you have high performing sales people who don’t like writing up the work or updating the records? Do they irritate their colleagues in other departments but are loved by their customers? Here are some suggestions for getting the best out of them Set very clear targets and expectations, review them regularly but let them get on with it. Support them in any way you or the team can to minimise any admin work Plan occasional accompanied visits to see them in action Have a fair reward system in place for when they achieve targets Review the reasons why they have succeeded as well as when they fall short If you have more than one in the team get them to share best practices regularly . #sales #highperformers #vistage

I never knew I would end up in a career in #sales. I stumbled on it and loved it and it is now a lifestyle. But when I look back, the seed was sown back in my days in high school and on campus. As I waited for 2-3 years to join campus, I joined the small family business where we were selling second-hand (mitumba)shoes and gumboots in the streets of Kisii county. And while in campus, I sold empty compact disks(CDs) from my cubicle. During the holidays, I joined some business guys and we hawked electronics in towns like Rongo, H/bay,Migori etc just to kill boredom and preserve my helb which interestingly used to hit my account during holidays ?? The point here is that we can't escape sales. The world system is designed in a manner that we are either buying or selling. The HR who interviewed you for that role had to convince you why that company is the best to work for. That was sales. For the married ones, we had to convince them why we were the best out of the millions in the world ?? . Sales. And for those doing business(big or small)or are planning to start, you are the Chief Sales Officer/evangelist of that business, this can't be delegated especially in the early stages! Whereas buying gets money out of our pocket, sales get money into our pocket. What would be the advice to my 20-year self? Whatever you do regardless of your academic, professional, or career background, better learn how to sell. A person who can sell will never sleep hungry.

If your sales hiring strategy or job post refers to "Athletes being a good fit" below is why you are a big, outdated, uninventive dunce ?? 1. All athletes start with a high degree of natural talent. There's a reason I wasn't playing for Liverpool yesterday and it's not because I wouldn't have liked to. Their natural athletic advantages don't help them sell 2. Wrong environment. Your sales floor is not geared for success in the same way as their athletic environment is. They get all the help they need at a high level of sports. Not true at your Org 3. Control. You can control your own marginal gains during training and performance but you can't control selling a turd product at too high a price with no buyers. 4. Enjoyment. Most of them really enjoy their chosen sport. It's been part of their life since Childhood. That's not true of sales. 5. Individual or Team player. Different sports have different ethos but sales (regardless of what your CEO tells you) is not a family sport. You're on your own for the most part. If you're not used to that, you'll struggle. I've missed a few out that I had on my list but my point is not that athletes can't make good sales people. They definitely can. Just not more so than anyone else. The competencies of a good seller can be found anywhere. There's no proven correlation between a sports background and selling. That's a well marketed myth from the old boys club. Let's stop peddling this nonsense and open our minds #salesrecruitment #salesjobs #sdrjobs
