Networking but make it fashion. I go to a ton of networking events, like a lot of us do here in Austin, this weekend rad. Friday night took me to my first event with Base—a connection club that just launched their Austin cohort and has, in true form, managed to make feel like an art installation. Picture this: a cliffside venue with floor-to-ceiling windows, live music, and outdoor candlelit lounges that glowed with conversations and cocktails. And the crowd? A well dressed and welcoming blend of everything Austin does best—international diplomacy meets stand-up comedy meets global tech, with some marketing and events pros thrown in. Sunday was the Slow Fashion Festival, where I was there to support Hannah Varnell, Co-Founder of Bloodbath Studio, where I’m currently the Business Advisor. Hannah moderated a panel on sustainability in media and entertainment at Riches Art Gallery, surrounded by Austin’s own powerhouses in sustainable fashion. On the panel was Ivy Chui, Founder of 24 Cobras production company, who’s creating a filmmaking space in Austin for voices that have been sidelined for as long as film has existed. Locals like Hannah and Ivy are building a creative ecosystem fueled by advocacy, talent, and drive. They’re centering projects around fashion films, Queer documentaries, and cinematic music videos. In the process, they’re making resources accessible, fostering community, and creating new physical and economic spaces that never existed here before. Talk about Keeping Austin Weird.. The weekend’s theme was sustainability—creating longevity. For me, longevity means scalability. It’s about building companies that engage with markets, technology, and social impact well into the future. Launching Ocotillo Agency is how I'm meeting the moment, merging tech and fashion to create iconic brands with both endurance and influence. Cheers networking Austin. We spoke with a number of Events teams and asked the following: Q) Is exhibition size or location more important? A) Out of those we spoke too: Those working for bigger brands felt attendees would find them even if they weren't in the best location. So larger spaces allows them to have more of their teams involved and create an experience in their space for attendees that you cannot get in a smaller space exhibition. So the size was better than the location. Those who chose location over size tended to work for Startups or SMB companies where they felt location was more important for brand exposure to a bigger number of attendees and being front and centre had better results as they may not have the brand pull of a larger org. Neither side quoted the budget requirements as a deciding factor for their choice. #events #tech #marketing

My biggest pet peeve with in-person events and conferences is that there’s always a buyers-sellers gap. Businesess are there to sell and no one is there to buy. If people are walking the floor and they don’t have a booth, then 9/10 they’re attending because they want to learn or network. 6 Questions to Ask Before Hosting an Event for Your Community So, you’ve decided to leverage community, and specifically in-person events, to strengthen your brand. Love that for you! ?? Here are 6 key questions to consider while you’re in the ideation phase (more context in the video): 1?? What’s the main goal of the event? 2?? Does this goal serve the community I’m building? 3?? What do I want attendees to take away from the event? 4?? What do I, as a brand/host, want to take away from the event? 5?? What are some ways to make it happen? 6?? How will I measure success, and what systems need to be in place to track it? Quick shoutout: One activity I brought into our latest F3 (Founders, Funders, Fractionals) event, which I dive into in the video, came from a Community Builder Soiree hosted by Ruthie Berber, Derek Kastner, and Zach Hawtof in August. They handed out cards with questions on them to spark connection as attendees arrived. I used this at our SF & LA TECH WEEK by a16z events , and it was a hit—really helped cut down on those awkward pitch slaps!
