?? Thanks to Business Insider, for including Everywhere Ventures co-founder Jenny Fielding in the list of the best women early-stage investors. Grateful to be part of such an inspiring group! "While she spends most of her time with founders in fintech, digital health, and business software, Fielding is a generalist at heart. She’s an early backer of Pair Eyewear, which raised a $75 million round of Series C funding last fall. The markup on her deal was an important reminder: 'When you see an incredible team in a large market at the pre-seed,' she said, 'invest even if it’s outside of your core thesis.'" Mention the name Vennette (no last name required) to anyone in the beauty industry, and they’ll know exactly who you are talking about. As Managing Director and Head of Beauty and Personal Care at Raymond James, she is a dealmaking powerhouse and BeautyMatter’s 2024 Person of the Year. Her success is marked by serendipitous encounters, determination, and open-mindedness in a high-stakes business, with individual livelihoods and industry-wide reputations on the line. Here are five key takeaways from the fireside chat with beauty’s deal maker, Vennette Ho Lee. ? Investment banking is a team effort, thriving on collaboration and diverse expertise to tackle complex financial challenges. ? Three-fourths of Raymond James' deals involve active founders, highlighting their crucial role in key transactions like mergers, acquisitions, and capital raises. ? As "beauty's banker," Vennette is often the first call for those raising funds or exiting. Her approach starts with a simple question: “Can we truly help this company?” She prioritizes projects where Raymond James can align with the founder's vision and offer long-term support, sometimes recognizing when they're not the best fit. ? There's been much talk about deal flow this year—founders struggling to fundraise and brands seeking exits. Vennette views these fluctuations as temporary, not reflective of the entire industry. Despite a consumer slowdown, beauty and wellness remain strong, outpacing the S&P for years. Though it's a tricky time, the overall outlook is still optimistic. ? A focused product assortment is key to brand success, reducing customer acquisition costs and building a strong identity. While retailers may push for new products, brands should prioritize their strengths and keep their lineup efficient, avoiding the urge to launch too many items at once. Stay tuned for more 2024 NEXT updates. #BeautyMatter #BMNEXT2024 #NEXTAwards

Three years ago, in May 2021, Carlyle invested roughly $600 million in a skin care company called Beautycounter.?The excitement faded quickly. In 2021, private equity firm Carlyle invested $600 million in Beautycounter, a skincare brand known for its clean beauty products and multilevel marketing model. Under founder Gregg Renfrew, Beautycounter aimed to grow from $400 million to $1 billion in annual sales and go public. However, the venture failed, leading to significant financial losses. Renee Hill, a successful Beautycounter seller, saw her earnings plummet from $177,000 annually to $19,000 after the collapse. Carlyle, which manages $425 billion across various sectors, faced one of its biggest setbacks due to this investment.
